King Charles set a clear boundary with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle last week by declaring their royal status without consultation, a commentator alleged. The letter sent on behalf of the monarch, which reinstated the Sussexes’ position as non-working royals, reportedly reinforced that King Charles is the one in charge.
A spokesperson for the Sussexes told the BBC the couple was “a little surprised not to have been told about this in advance”. The couple reportedly sent back questions within an hour of receiving the letter, which was sent on behalf of the King by Lord Chamberlain, but were informed that it had already been circulated to the media.
However, broadcaster and photographer Helena Chard said there was “no discussion required”. She told Fox News Digital: “King Charles’ narrative is decisive as he draws a line in the sand — nothing new here, no more discussion required.
“I’m sure the Sussexes expected flexibility. Prince Harry may be the king’s son, but he lacks power to amend and dictate the monarch’s statement.”
The letter stated Harry and Meghan will not be able to use titles of “His and Her Royal Highness”, and remain “private citizens”, after moving back from California with their children Archie and Lilibet in August.
This letter makes clear that any engagements they carry out will be in a private capacity and they will not be representing the Royal Family.
In response, Chard said the monarchy “can only have one voice”, which includes the Prince and Princess of Wales.
She continued: “Prince William and Princess Catherine are the future king and queen. They officially speak for the crown alongside King Charles and Queen Camilla. It’s constitutional, and the crown takes precedence.”
The letter was sent to Prince Harry’s team, government departments, military officials and Lord Lieutenants, according to Palace sources.
The couple are thought to be living in a non-royal residence outside of London after returning to the UK in August. They spent roughly six years in the USA after leaving Britain and denouncing their royal duties in 2020.
