Susanna Reid was left issuing a six-word response to the news that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have moved their children to a new school over “security concerns”. Harry and Meghan moved to the UK from America just weeks ago, with their young children, Archie and Lilibet, having started at school here.

However, just days after they started, the Sussexes changed their children’s school due to security concerns during the school run. Headlines on Tuesday, 15 September, focused on the update, with Good Morning Britain discussing the matter. At one point, Susanna remarked that she had “sympathy” over the situation, and declared: “It’s very disruptive for the children.” Susanna’s co-star Ed began by asking: “Is this the start of a new chapter for the Sussexes, or is this a new week, new day, new story?”

Susanna then asked royal editor Chris Ship: “Tell us why this story about their school security has come out, because I would have thought they would want their children’s school, the security around their children’s school to remain very low profile. The cynics would say this is part of a bid for attention for their review of security, but is there another reason we’re talking about the school today?”

He replied: “The school thing wasn’t meant to come out, I don’t know how it came out. There’s lots of parents in schools, people would have perhaps seen their car. The issue with the school became apparent, that if you’re going to do this every single day, same journey, same time every day, and anyone who knows Oxford in the school term time, it’s not an easy place to get to and from, their security people decided that, ‘you would become a bit of a target, you don’t have state-funded security, we’re trying to stay behind you as best we can but you’re stuck in traffic for long periods of time’.”

He added: “You might argue, did they not do this test run during the term-time? Well no, because they only made the decision in the middle of August that they’re going to come. The kids basically tried a new school yesterday, they’ve started a new school today.”

Susanna replied: “It’s very disruptive for the children.” She went on: “I’ve been talking this morning about the fact that I have enormous sympathy for their request to have their security reviewed, because whether you’re a working royal or non-working royal, they are the most high-profile royals, he is fifth in line to the throne, and they clearly get threats and are targets.

“You can argue they brought that on themselves, and you can argue that they’ve got a lot of money and should pay for their own security. They can’t pay for armed security and god forbid something dreadful happens, I can’t imagine people saying, ‘Oh well, they were non-working royals so what are you going to do?’”

Chris admitted: “I don’t know what’s going to happen. What is clear is that they’re both having a review, but they’ve been told that review doesn’t necessarily mean it’s going to be upgraded.” He continued: “Who knows where it’s going to go but that’s where we are.”

As the segment came to an end, Susanna said: “And here we all, over again.”
