SHOCK: Strictly’s Josh Widdicombe ‘panics’ live on air as viewers share outrage
Strictly Come Dancing host Josh Widdicombe has come under fresh scrutiny after viewers and a body language expert claimed he still appeared uncomfortable during the show’s first live episode.
The comedian returned to the BBC ballroom alongside Emma Willis and Johannes Radebe after receiving a mixed response to his presenting debut the previous weekend.
Some viewers had already commented on Josh appearing nervous during the launch show, and body language expert Inbaal Honigman has now suggested that his confidence did not appear to have increased.
Her comments are an interpretation of his on-screen behaviour rather than confirmation of how Josh was actually feeling.
Expert Claims Josh Looked Less Confident
Speaking to Express.co.uk on behalf of Covers.com, Inbaal said: “Josh’s confidence doesn’t seem to have increased since the first show.”
She went further, adding: “If anything, he might be questioning himself more.”
The expert compared Josh’s movements during the opening sequence with those of Emma and Johannes.
According to Inbaal, Emma appeared relaxed and enthusiastic, while Johannes looked completely at ease on the dance floor.
She described Josh’s movements as much smaller and more careful.
“But Josh is moving his body using small, careful gestures, as if doing his best not to mess anything up,” she said.
Inbaal interpreted those gestures as signs of nervousness, although body language alone cannot establish a person’s internal emotional state.
‘Small, Trepidatious Moves’
The expert also focused on Josh’s facial expressions and his attempts to interact with his co-hosts.
She said his familiar comedic expression remained in place throughout the introduction, with raised eyebrows and parted lips.
According to Inbaal, after the dancing stopped, Josh appeared to look towards Emma and Johannes while maintaining the same expression.
She suggested he may have been trying to joke about his own dancing abilities.
When the trio moved into their presenting duties, Inbaal again claimed there was a visible contrast.
“Emma and Johannes throw their arms wide, in welcoming, enthusiastic gestures, while Josh again is seen using smaller, trepidatious moves,” she said.
She added that Josh stretched his fingers towards Johannes “as if reaching for a life raft”.
That description reflects the expert’s interpretation rather than a statement from Josh himself.
Viewers Question Josh’s Place in New Line-Up
The reaction on social media was similarly mixed, with several viewers saying Josh still looked uncomfortable alongside Emma and Johannes.
One viewer wrote: “I’m sorry, I want to give him a chance, but Josh already looks so out of place.”
They also questioned why Strictly now needs three presenters.
Another said they found it difficult to look away from Josh because he appeared “so terrified, so uncomfortable, so out of place next to Emma and Johannes”.
A third viewer offered a similar assessment, writing: “I’ve never seen anyone look so out of place than Josh Widdicombe does on Strictly.”
These comments represent individual viewer reactions rather than a consensus about his performance.
Pressure Builds on New Strictly Hosting Team
The 2026 series marks a major change for Strictly Come Dancing following the departure of longtime presenters Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman.
Emma, Josh and Johannes now share hosting duties, creating a new three-person format that viewers are still getting used to.
Their first live show therefore carried extra pressure, with audiences watching closely to see how the new team would settle into the role.
Josh’s performance has attracted particular attention because of the contrast some viewers believe they can see between him and his more relaxed-looking co-hosts.
But with the new series only just beginning, the presenting trio still have plenty of time to develop their rhythm together.
For now, the debate around Josh’s body language has become another talking point in a Strictly season already defined by major change.
