Coronation Street’s Original Blanche Hunt Patricia Cutts Died at 48 Just Weeks After Making Her Cobbles Debut

Long before Maggie Jones became synonymous with Blanche Hunt on Coronation Street, another actress had already stepped onto the famous cobbles in the role.

Patricia Cutts was the original performer to play Deirdre’s mother, appearing in just two episodes of the ITV soap before her life came to a tragic end at the age of 48.

Her first appearance as Blanche aired on August 19, 1974, followed by another on August 21.

Less than three weeks later, on September 6, Patricia was found dead at her flat in Chelsea, London. An inquest later returned a verdict of suicide.

Her death came just as she had taken on what would become one of Coronation Street’s most recognizable characters.

Blanche was later recast, and Maggie Jones eventually became the actress most closely associated with the role.

But Patricia’s career had already stretched far beyond Weatherfield.

From Hollywood to Coronation Street

Born in London in 1926, Patricia came from a prominent showbusiness family.

Her father, Graham Cutts, was one of Britain’s leading filmmakers during the 1920s and worked with major names including Alfred Hitchcock, Basil Dean, Gracie Fields, Ivor Novello and Noël Coward.

Her mother, Robin Coles, was also an actress.

Patricia attended St Margaret’s School in Hampstead but reportedly left boarding school at just 14 before eventually training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.

She later adopted the stage name Patricia Wayne and began building a career across film and television.

Her credits included appearances in Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Perry Mason, The Tingler, The Lucy Show, Down You Go and You Bet Your Life.

She also appeared in Alfred Hitchcock’s North by Northwest alongside Cary Grant, giving her a connection to one of Hollywood’s most celebrated films.

During the 1950s, Patricia worked on both sides of the Atlantic as her career continued to expand.

Personal Loss and a Difficult Period

Patricia also experienced major difficulties away from the screen.

Her mother died in 1954, and contemporary reports said Patricia collapsed while attending the funeral.

She had reportedly spent the days before Robin’s death caring for her around the clock without rest.

Patricia married three times and had one son, Nicholas Baker Findlay.

In November 1958, she was arrested in Los Angeles on suspicion of a felony hit and run following a traffic collision.

Police detained her at home around two hours after the incident.

Patricia, who was booked under her married name Patricia Findlay, maintained that she had remained at the scene and made reasonable efforts to identify herself.

She said she stayed for around 40 minutes before leaving to seek treatment for a head injury and had placed her registration details on the windscreen of the other vehicle.

By January 1959, the case had been dismissed after witnesses supported her account that she had spoken with the other driver following the collision.

A Career Cut Short

Years later, Patricia returned to British television and secured the role of Blanche Hunt on Coronation Street.

It could have opened another significant chapter in a career that had already taken her from British cinema to American television and Hollywood productions.

Instead, her time on the programme lasted just two episodes.

Patricia was found at her home in Elm Park Gardens in Chelsea on September 6, 1974.

The inquest into her death concluded that she had died by suicide, with barbiturate poisoning recorded in reports about her passing.

She was survived by her son Nicholas and grandchildren Thalia Baker, Brandon Baker and Eylse Baker.

For many Coronation Street viewers, Blanche Hunt will forever be associated with Maggie Jones.

But Patricia Cutts was the actress who first brought the character to the cobbles, adding a brief but significant final chapter to a career that had already crossed British television, Hollywood and some of the biggest productions of her era.
