BBC presenter Christopher Price was just 34 when he was found dead at his London home in 2002, with doctors later discovering that an extremely rare illness linked to an ear infection had caused his sudden death.
The broadcaster had become one of the BBC’s rising stars after taking charge of entertainment news programme Liquid News in May 2000.
In the days before his death, Price had been suffering from an ear infection. Concern grew when he failed to arrive for work, prompting a colleague to visit his flat in central London.
There, Price was found dead.
Because prescription medication was discovered at the property, there was initially speculation that his death could have been connected to an overdose.
That was later ruled out.
Investigators determined that Price had suffered heart failure caused by meningoencephalitis, an extremely rare condition believed to have developed after the infection spread from his ear.
Christopher Was Considered a BBC ‘Rising Star’
Price’s broadcasting career had already developed rapidly by the time of his death.
After graduating from Reading University with a degree in languages, he began working as a journalist for BBC local radio.
In 1994, he joined the launch team for BBC Radio Five Live, where he worked as a senior broadcast journalist and occasionally stepped in as a presenter.
Three years later, he moved into television as part of the team launching BBC News 24.
Price became an evening presenter and newsreader before eventually moving into entertainment broadcasting with Liquid News.
His sharp humour and distinctive presenting style quickly helped him stand out.
BBC executives reportedly regarded him as one of the corporation’s brightest emerging talents, signing him to a £250,000 two-year contract in 2001.
Price himself appeared surprised by the attention his television career attracted.
Speaking in an interview that year, he jokingly described himself as “a fat, bald homosexual” and said he did not consider himself conventional television material.
But audiences and BBC bosses clearly disagreed.
His career was continuing to expand, and Price had been preparing for another major assignment shortly before his death.
Eurovision Plans Never Happened
Price had been due to present a week of BBC programmes from the Eurovision Song Contest in Estonia the following month.
Instead, the BBC found itself paying tribute to one of its most promising presenters.
A special programme celebrating Price’s life and career was broadcast on BBC Choice on April 23, 2002.
Stuart Murphy, who was controller of BBC Choice at the time, remembered him as an exceptional broadcaster with enormous potential.
“Christopher was a unique broadcaster, with enormous passion and potential,” Murphy said.
He also praised Price’s “acerbic wit and boundless cheek”, describing him as both hugely entertaining on screen and an enjoyable friend away from the cameras.
Lorraine Heggessey, then controller of BBC One, similarly said Price appeared destined for a major future in broadcasting.
“He clearly had a bright future,” she said, adding that he had established a strong and distinctive voice in a remarkably short period.
The circumstances surrounding his death made the loss particularly shocking.
What had initially appeared to be an ordinary ear infection ultimately developed into a rare and devastating medical condition.
At just 34, Price’s career was still accelerating, with the BBC investing heavily in his future and further presenting opportunities already planned.
Instead, his unexpected absence from work led to the discovery that brought his promising career to a sudden end.
More than two decades later, Christopher Price is still remembered not only for the tragedy of how young he was when he died, but for the distinctive broadcaster colleagues believed was only beginning to show what he could achieve.
