Prince Harry Reportedly Returns to UK With Private Diana Film Plan Ahead of 30th Anniversary

Prince Harry is reportedly using part of his extended stay in Britain to develop a television project about his late mother, Princess Diana, as preparations begin ahead of the 30th anniversary of her death.

The Duke of Sussex is said to have contacted some of Diana’s former friends and others who knew her personally, asking whether they would contribute to a film centered on her life and legacy.

The claim was made by royal commentator Richard Kay during an appearance on Palace Confidential, where he predicted that the anniversary next year could put Diana back at the center of the royal conversation and bring renewed scrutiny to the strained relationship between Harry and Prince William.

“Diana has dominated the thinking of both William and Harry for the last ten years,” Kay told host Luke Blackall.

According to Kay, Harry’s reported project could become a major focus for the Duke over the coming 12 months.

Harry Said to Be Reaching Out to Diana’s Friends

Kay claimed that Harry’s time in the UK is connected, at least in part, to his plans for the film.

“I am told that one of the reasons Harry’s here is to make a television film, his own film, about his mother,” he said.

“I know he has been reaching out to his friends and others who knew her, asking them to contribute.”

Kay added that the project is likely to occupy much of Harry’s attention as the anniversary approaches.

“That’s going to occupy a lot of his headspace over the next twelve months,” he said.

The report did not identify which of Diana’s former friends have reportedly been approached or whether any have agreed to take part.

It also gave no details about where the proposed film would be broadcast or when it might be released.

Still, the prospect of Harry creating his own television project about Diana could become significant given the very different public positions he and William now occupy.

William and Harry’s Shared Diana Legacy

Kay noted that the brothers appeared far more united nine years ago when they marked the 20th anniversary of their mother’s death.

Since then, their relationship has become increasingly strained.

The commentator argued that any renewed focus on Diana inevitably involves both sons, even though Harry is often more closely associated with speaking publicly about her.

“People always link Harry to Diana, but she was the mother of two boys,” Kay said.

“William is just as much his mother’s son as Harry is.”

He then claimed that Harry has attempted to position himself more strongly around Diana’s legacy, something he suggested has frustrated William.

Kay said William tends not to speak about Diana as frequently, although he has addressed her memory at important moments.

He also predicted that Harry’s connection to the Spencer family could receive greater attention in the months ahead.

“This issue of trying to use Diana, the Spencer brand, the Spencer name, to divide himself away from the House of Windsor, I think is something we’re going to see even more of,” he said.

Those remarks are Kay’s interpretation and have not been publicly confirmed by either Harry or William.

Diana’s Family Is Also Revisiting Her Story

The reported television project comes as Diana’s brother, Earl Spencer, prepares to release a new book about his sister this month.

That publication, combined with the approaching 30th anniversary, is likely to renew public interest in Diana’s life and the influence she continues to have on both of her sons.

For Harry, a film featuring people who personally knew Diana could provide a way to explore her story through memories beyond his own.

But because Diana remains equally central to William’s life, the project may also bring their differing approaches to her legacy back into focus.
