Beloved ITV Children’s TV Star Peter Llewellyn Jones Passes Away at 76 as Tributes Pour In

Peter Llewellyn Jones, the much loved ITV presenter and actor best remembered for his role in the 1990s children’s series The Riddlers, has passed away at the age of 76.

The television star became a familiar face to a generation of young viewers through his work as Mr Grimley, appearing alongside the puppet characters Mossop and Tiddler in the popular ITV programme.

Llewellyn Jones also built a respected career beyond children’s entertainment, becoming widely known for his work with British Sign Language and for his longstanding support of the Deaf community.

Following news of his passing, tributes quickly began appearing from former students, viewers and organizations that had worked closely with him over the years.

The British Deaf Association described him as a “BSL champion” and a dedicated ally who had supported the community for more than five decades.

“Today the British Deaf Association is deeply saddened by the passing of Peter Llewellyn-Jones, a BSL champion and strong ally of the deaf community for over 50 years,” the organization said in a video tribute.

Peter Became a Familiar Face on Children’s Television

For many viewers, Llewellyn Jones will be remembered most clearly from The Riddlers.

In the series, he played Mr Grimley alongside Mossop and Tiddler, two puppet creatures known as Riddlers.

The show became one of his most recognizable television roles during the 1990s.

He was also the presenter of Our World, a programme that ran throughout the 1980s and 1990s and explored the ways children approached different aspects of everyday life.

But his television career also reflected another major part of his life.

Llewellyn Jones worked with British Sign Language on the children’s programme Insight, which featured short stories and sketches aimed at Deaf and Hard of Hearing young people during the early 1980s.

He was also involved with the BBC programme Listening Eye.

His contribution to communication between Deaf and hearing audiences later became an important part of the tributes paid to him.

British Deaf Association Pays Tribute

The British Deaf Association said Llewellyn Jones had maintained a long and valued relationship with the organization over many decades.

“From the early BDA Summer Schools through to wider national Deaf community events, he played an important role in improving communication and access between Deaf and hearing people,” the association said.

It also described him as “a visionary leader and pioneering advocate for linguistic rights.”

That work continued well beyond his television years.

Later in life, Llewellyn Jones taught at a number of universities, working with students training to become BSL English interpreters.

Several of those former students shared personal memories of him following the announcement.

One wrote: “Lovely man and I had be pleasure of being taught by him. I always left his class feeling good about [myself].”

Another former student described him as “the most enthralling teacher I have had, funny and insightful,” adding that they felt privileged to have known him.

“Such a wonderful man! RIP,” the tribute continued.

Viewers Remember The Riddlers

Fans who grew up watching Llewellyn Jones on television also shared their memories.

One viewer wrote that they were saddened by the news and recalled watching The Riddlers as a child.

“I love The Riddlers and I remember buying it on video, when I was a kid,” the fan said.

For many, Llewellyn Jones will be remembered both for the warmth he brought to children’s television and for the work he carried out away from the spotlight.

His career connected entertainment, education and accessibility, while his decades of involvement with the Deaf community left an impact far beyond the programmes that first made him familiar to viewers.
