GB News was dealt an embarrassing snub during Plaid Cymru’s historic win in Caerphilly. The news channel was in Wales to report on the results of the by-election, where the Welsh political party won with 47% of the vote. Meanwhile, Reform UK is in second place on 36%, while Labour came in third. It’s Labour’s first defeat in the area for 100 years. GB News presenter Katherine Forster spoke to the breakfast team and said that Plaid Cymru’s press team prevented Lindsay Whittle from speaking to GB News after his win in Caerphilly. The team eventually did get to speak to Lindsay, but Katherine explained: “They told me despite the interview we’d done, despite him thanking us, that they do not engage with GB News.”
One disappointed fan argued: “Hey @Plaid_Cymru I didn’t know you guys existed 1/2 hour ago and now this. That’s not a great first impression.” A second said: “Speaks volumes about them. Expect worse, way worse now they have some clout.”
Labour’s deputy First Minister of Wales has reacted to the loss and spoken about what the party needs to do to win back voters.
He said on BBC 5 Live’s Breakfast programme: “Number one, they’re looking for a party that can actually offer genuine hope of a better future for them and their children.
“And that does mean really basic things, opportunities for jobs and skills, money in their pocket.
“There’s a lesson there for UK government and for Welsh government, which is to align our policies to make sure we’re delivering those sorts of things. Another lesson we learned very strongly is that by-elections are not the final big general elections we have here in Wales, for the Senedd, which we will have next May.”
The by-election was brought upon by the death of Labour’s Hefin David. The Labour Party had exactly half the seats in the Welsh Parliament and was a seat short of a majority. It is now two seats short.
Meanwhile, Labour MP Nick Thomas-Symonds argued his party’s loss in Caerphilly is “disappointing”.
Thomas-Symonds told BBC Breakfast: “By-elections are always difficult for incumbent governments and this one was no different.”
