‘We lost more than we could have imagined’- Prince Harry, Meghan Markle release joint emotional statement
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have released an emotional joint statement marking the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, just weeks after returning to Britain with Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex shared the message through their official website under the heading “Honoring First Responders on 9/11”.
In the statement, Harry and Meghan reflected on both the devastating losses of September 11, 2001, and the extraordinary bravery shown by those who rushed to help others during the attacks and their aftermath.
“Twenty-five years ago, on September 11th, we lost more than we could have imagined,” the couple said.
But they added that the tragedy also showed “the very best of humanity”, highlighting ordinary people who ran towards danger to protect and assist others.
The tribute comes at a significant moment for the Sussex family after Harry and Meghan recently relocated to Britain with Archie and Lilibet following several years living in the United States.
Harry and Meghan Honour First Responders
Through Archewell Philanthropies, the couple paid tribute to firefighters, police officers, paramedics, medical professionals, military personnel and the many other first responders involved in the response to 9/11.
They praised the courage shown on the day itself as well as the commitment many first responders have continued to demonstrate in the decades since.
“Today, Archewell Philanthropies honors the firefighters, law enforcement officers, paramedics, medical professionals, service members, and countless first responders whose courage on that day — and in the years that followed — continues to move us,” their statement read.
Harry and Meghan also acknowledged the long-term physical and emotional impact carried by first responders and their families.
They noted that, for 25 years, many of those affected have continued serving their communities despite what the attacks and their aftermath cost them personally.
The couple said Archewell Philanthropies remained grateful for their “sacrifice” and “resilience”, as well as the example they continue to provide.
Their message concluded simply: “Today, we remember. And we honor everyone who serves, protects, and cares for others when it matters most.”
Statement Comes After Sussexes’ UK Return
The tribute is one of the latest public messages from Harry and Meghan since moving back to Britain with their children.
The couple had been based in the United States for several years after stepping away from their roles as senior working members of the Royal Family.
Their return has placed them back at the centre of intense public attention, with interest growing around their family life, future engagements and relationship with the wider Royal Family.
Despite the scrutiny, the Sussexes have continued to make public statements through their own organisations and platforms.

Harry was also recently spotted at Soho Farmhouse, the private members’ club in Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire.
According to reports, he used the gym at the property before later joining Meghan for brunch.
The outing was among the couple’s first appearances together since establishing themselves back in Britain.
Soho Farmhouse has a longstanding connection with Harry and Meghan, and their latest visit suggested they are beginning to settle into a new routine following their return from the United States.
Their 9/11 statement, however, offered a more solemn moment.
Rather than focusing on the renewed attention surrounding their move, Harry and Meghan used the anniversary to recognise people whose lives were permanently changed by the attacks and those who stepped forward to help.
