A royal insider has revealed one more thing that Prince Harry “obviously hated” about growing up in the royal household with his older brother, Prince William, in an explosive new documentary. On Saturday night (July 25), Channel 5 marked Prince George’s 13th birthday with an hour-long special that delves into the making of a future King. The TV special gave viewers an insight into what life is like in a royal household and how the Wales’ are bringing up the next generation of monarchs compared to how Harry and Will were raised in the 1980s.
Halfway through the special, a royal insider revealed one big thing that drove a wedge between the brothers years before their major fallout. Richard Kay, Editor-at-large, Daily Mail, told viewers: “The heir and the spare thing is a little bit cruel.

“Yes, Charlotte and Louis are spares as it were, like Harry. He obviously resents the heir and the spare thing, but Diana definitely tried to protect him from that.” He went on to share one painful moment for the dad-of-two growing up in the royal household.
He revealed: “I remember how Diana, for example, complained to the Queen Mother when Queen Elizabeth would always put Prince William next to her because he was the important one. She had to go to her and say. ‘Grandmama, please can you show the same to Harry?’
“I suspect it was rather difficult for someone like the Queen Mother to change her ways.” It comes after Princess Charlotte’s birth changed history for the British monarchy following the Succession to the Crown Act in 2013. The new reform means that the Princess will keep her place in the line of succession after abolishing the male-preference rules.

This ensures that birth order determines the heir, meaning a younger brother no longer bypasses an older sister, unlike her aunt, Princess Anne. The revelation clearly had an impact on Prince Harry, after naming his 2023 memoir Spare, which contained various bombshell claims and accusations about the Royal Family, in particular Prince William, King Charles and Queen Camilla.

Earlier this year, it was revealed that the dad-of-two reportedly made a staggering £22million from the release of his book, just days after Catherine’s 41st birthday. Spare soon became the UK’s fastest-selling non-fiction book ever after being published by Penguin Random House.
The Daily Mail previously reported that Harry was understood to have clinched a £16million advance as part of a £32million four-book deal in June 2021. Fellow bestselling author Richard Osman – author of hit crime novels including The Thursday Murder Club – previously used his own knowledge of the industry to estimate how much he believes Harry has been paid.
Speaking previously on his podcast The Rest Is Entertainment, Osman said: “The book that Harry wrote, it’s impossible to overestimate how much money that has made. I mean, it’s been one of the most successful books. The fastest-selling non-fiction book of all time. I’ve done some back-of-the-envelope calculations because I like to.
“I know what you get paid per book. Got a $20million advance. The thing with an advance is, you get paid in advance, $20million in that case, you do not make a penny until your publisher makes back their $20million. And once they’ve made back their $20million, and there’s all sorts of sliding scales about how that works, what they get, what you get, once you’ve made the $20million, then you get your royalties.”
