Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s 2017 BBC engagement interview has resurfaced, with royal fans left puzzled by the duke’s claim.

Prince Harry’s puzzling claim about Meghan Markle has caught the attention of royal fans after an old interview resurfaced online.
Back in November 2017, a year before their wedding, Harry and Meghan sat down with the BBC for their engagement interview. During the interview, Harry was asked whether he had known who Meghan was before the two were set up on a date by a mutual friend. Harry stated he had no idea who Meghan was, despite her being a well-known American actress.
The claim has left royal fans baffled, as Harry wrote in his memoir Spare that his brother, Prince William, and his sister-in-law, Kate Middleton, knew her by name. It comes after it was revealed Harry must “avoid a big danger” to salvage his marriage.
This has prompted many to question whether Harry truly had no knowledge of Meghan, particularly given that his brother William, with whom he was close at the time, appeared to recognize her immediately.
After the video resurfaced on X, one royal fan commented, “I thought W&C are fans of Suits before H even met her. Haven’t they told him about this A-list actress? Lol.”

Another user wrote, “He’d never heard of her, but in Spare, he says William and Catherine were massive Suits fans.”
This prompted a third person to add, “Shaking her head no is a subconscious tell also. She knows he’s lying.”
While it remains possible that Harry, 41, was genuinely unaware of Meghan before they began dating, the duke did assert in his 2023 memoir Spare that Prince William and Princess Catherine were well acquainted with who she was.

He recounted in his memoir, “I casually mentioned that there was… a new woman in my life. They surged forward. ‘Who is she?’ ‘I’ll tell you, but please, please, please, I need you both to keep it a secret.’
“‘Yes, Harold, yes yes – who is it?’ ‘She’s an actress.’ ‘Oh?’ ‘She’s American.’ ‘Oh.’ ‘On a show called Suits.’ Their mouths fell open. They turned to each other. Then Willy turned to me and said: ‘F–k off!’ ‘What?’ ‘No way.’ ‘Sorry?’ ‘Impossible!’
“I was baffled, until Willy and Kate explained that they were regular – nay, religious – viewers of Suits. Great, I thought, laughing.
“I’ve been worrying about the wrong thing. All this time I’d thought Willy and Kate might not welcome Meg into the family, but now I had to worry about them hounding her for an autograph.”
Meghan starred as Rachel Zane on the legal drama Suits from 2011 to 2018. She appeared in the first seven seasons of the show.
Her final episode as a regular cast member (Season 7, Episode 16, Good-Bye) aired in April 2018. She left the show and retired from acting before her marriage to Harry in May 2018.
