BREAKING: Meghan Markle’s ‘determined’ response to King Charles’ offer revealed
A revealing exchange between Meghan Markle and King Charles in the days before her 2018 royal wedding has resurfaced, with a royal author suggesting it offered an early glimpse of the Duchess of Sussex’s fiercely independent approach.
Prince Harry and Meghan married on May 19, 2018, at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, in a ceremony watched by millions around the world.
The wedding brought together members of the Royal Family, close friends and a long list of celebrity guests, while Meghan’s gown became one of the most talked-about details of the day.
But behind the scenes, the final days before the ceremony were complicated by the absence of Meghan’s father, Thomas Markle Snr.

In his book Queen of Our Times, Hardman wrote that, according to one friend, Meghan replied: “Can we meet halfway?”
Hardman interpreted the response as an indication of Meghan’s confidence and independence.
He wrote: “Here was an indicator that this was no blushing bride, but a confident, independent woman determined to make a grand entrance on her own.”
Rather than being escorted for the entire walk, Meghan entered St George’s Chapel by herself before Charles joined her later and accompanied her towards the altar.
The arrangement became one of the memorable moments of the royal wedding.
Hardman’s account is based on what he says he was told by a friend, meaning the wording of Meghan’s response is presented as a recollection rather than a directly recorded exchange.
Harry Later Praised His Father
Prince Harry later spoke warmly about Charles stepping in.
During a documentary marking his father’s 70th birthday in 2018, Harry said he had asked Charles to help and that his father had immediately agreed.
“I asked him to, and I think he knew it was coming,” Harry recalled.
He said Charles responded: “Yes, of course, I’ll do whatever Meghan needs, and I’m here to support you.”
Harry described it as an opportunity for his father to step up for the couple during a difficult moment.
“For him, that’s a fantastic opportunity to step up and be that support,” Harry said.
He added that he was “very grateful” Charles had been willing to take on the role.
Moment Takes on New Meaning Years Later
The exchange has attracted renewed interest because of the dramatically changed relationship between Harry, Meghan and the Royal Family since the wedding.
At the time, Charles’s decision to walk Meghan down the aisle was widely seen as a sign of support and welcome.
Hardman’s account, however, suggests Meghan was equally determined to retain some control over how she entered the ceremony.
His interpretation presents the “meet halfway” request as symbolic of a woman who wanted to maintain her independence even while joining one of the world’s most traditional institutions.
That moment now stands in contrast to the tensions that later developed between the Sussexes and other members of the Royal Family.
Harry and Meghan eventually stepped away from life as working royals and built a separate home in California.
Fresh Attention on Harry and Charles
The wedding story has resurfaced as Harry and Meghan have reportedly returned to the UK, once again placing their relationship with King Charles under close scrutiny.
Royal expert Lynn Carratt has suggested Charles’s cancer diagnosis may have played a role in Harry reassessing his relationship with his family.
“I think King Charles’ cancer diagnosis could certainly have played a part in Harry reassessing where he wants to be and, perhaps more importantly, how much time he has left to repair his relationship with his family,” she said.
Her comments are an interpretation of Harry’s possible motivations rather than confirmation from the Duke himself.
The contrast between past and present is striking.
Back in 2018, Charles was stepping forward to support Meghan at one of the most important moments of her life, while Harry publicly praised his father for being there when needed.
Eight years later, their relationship has gone through major upheaval.
Yet the newly resurfaced account from the wedding offers a reminder of a very different period — one in which Charles and Meghan were preparing to walk towards the altar together, even if, according to Hardman, the future Duchess was determined to make the first part of that journey on her own.
