EXCLUSIVE: GMB’s Susanna Reid issues six-word response about safety of Harry and Meghan
Susanna Reid has expressed sympathy for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle after the couple reportedly moved Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet to a different school just days into the new term because of security concerns.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex recently returned to Britain with their children after several years living in the United States.
Archie and Lilibet had only just begun attending school in the UK when their parents reportedly decided the daily journey created difficulties for the family’s private security team.
The development was discussed on Good Morning Britain on Tuesday, September 15, where Susanna reacted to the disruption facing the children.
“It’s very disruptive for the children,” she said.
The presenter went on to say she had “enormous sympathy” for Harry and Meghan’s concerns over protection, arguing that their status as non-working royals does not remove the potential risks they face.
Security Team Raised Concerns Over School Run
During the discussion, Susanna questioned ITV royal editor Chris Ship about why details concerning the children’s school had become public at all.
She noted that Harry and Meghan would presumably want information surrounding Archie and Lilibet’s schooling and security arrangements to remain as private as possible.
Chris responded that the information was never intended to become public.
“The school thing wasn’t meant to come out, I don’t know how it came out,” he said.
He suggested other parents may have noticed the family’s vehicle before explaining the practical problem reportedly identified by Harry and Meghan’s security team.
According to Chris, travelling along the same route at roughly the same time every day could make the family more predictable.
The situation was allegedly complicated by traffic around Oxford during term time.
Harry and Meghan do not currently have routine state-funded protection, meaning their private security team has responsibility for accompanying them.
Chris said the concern was that the family could spend extended periods stuck in traffic while making the same journey every day, potentially creating a security vulnerability.
He added that the Sussexes had only decided in mid-August to move back to Britain, leaving limited time to assess how the school journey would work during a normal term.
The children reportedly tried another school on Monday before beginning there the following day.
Susanna Voices Sympathy for Sussexes
Susanna acknowledged that critics could question why the potential problem had not been identified before Archie and Lilibet began at their first school.
However, she argued that the wider debate over Harry and Meghan’s security should not be dismissed simply because they are no longer working royals.
She pointed to Harry’s position in the line of succession and the couple’s extremely high public profile.
Susanna said there would inevitably be arguments that Harry and Meghan should fund their own protection because of their wealth, while others might claim their public activities have contributed to the attention they receive.
But she highlighted one important complication: private security personnel in Britain cannot simply provide the same armed protection available through state security services.
The presenter questioned how people would react if something serious happened to the family after their concerns had been rejected.
Security Review Offers No Guarantee
Chris also confirmed that Harry and Meghan’s security arrangements are currently being reviewed.
However, he stressed that a review does not automatically mean the level of protection provided to the Sussexes will be increased.
“I don’t know what’s going to happen,” he admitted.
“What is clear is that they’re both having a review, but they’ve been told that review doesn’t necessarily mean it’s going to be upgraded.”
The reported school change represents one of the first significant practical challenges for Harry and Meghan since relocating their family back to Britain.
While their team has reportedly made clear that the decision was not a criticism of the original school or its management, the disruption has once again placed the Sussexes’ long-running security battle under the spotlight.
For Archie and Lilibet, meanwhile, the immediate consequence has been another major adjustment only days after beginning their new life in the UK.
As Susanna summed up at the end of the GMB discussion, the Sussex security debate appears to have returned once again — with no clear resolution yet in sight.
