Zara McDermott’s relationship with Sam Thompson was doomed from the moment she cheated on him five years ago with a music executive while appearing on the X Factor, MailOnline can reveal. 

Sources close to the couple say Sam’s family never quite forgave Zara following her fling with music boss Brahim Fourad in 2019, despite their attempts to welcome her back into the fold.

The Made in Chelsea star’s protective sister Louise, 34, was the most vocal in her disapproval of Zara and questioned her brother on why he took her back, but agreed, for his sake, to give her a second chance.

But the couple’s relationship failed to last the distance – and they have now officially cut ties just over five years on from her affair.

The news came as no surprise to sources close to the reality stars who believed they did well to last as long as they had following Zara’s infidelity.

A friend told MailOnline: ‘Zara and Sam’s relationship just never had felt like it was heading for the long haul.

‘They never really recovered from Zara’s cheating, most couples would have struggled lasting for as long as they did afterwards.

‘Zara had some big making up to do, especially with Louise, she really wasn’t happy when Sam took her back.

‘But she managed to make it work and they had some great times together again, but it just felt like it was never going to be truly serious.

‘They were delaying the inevitable for several months as they had drifted apart and their lives had become very different.’

Another friend described Zara and Sam as an ‘odd pairing’ and said they didn’t think the pair were that well suited.

The source told MailOnline: ‘Sam’s a bit of a man child with bundles of energy and Zara’s a fashion girl at heart, she’s quite mature behind all the silliness you see in their TikTok videos.

‘She’s only 28 but has an old head on young shoulders.

‘Her maturity was helpful when dealing with Sam’s low moments which often occurred due to his mental health battles. She really understood how they affected him.’

Sam, 32, initially ended his relationship with Zara in wake of her cheating in September 2019.

They had been dating for 16 months when he discovered what happened between the former Love Island star and Fouradi, who had previously worked for Simon Cowell as an A&R director for Syco.

Zara was appearing on the celebrity X Factor as part of a group comprised of ex-Love Island contestants on the one-off ITV series, eventually won by former Towie star Megan McKenna.

Speaking to Jamie Laing about her infidelity while appearing on Made In Chelsea in October 2022, Zara said: ‘When it happened I genuinely thought that me and Sam were going to break up, inevitably. I just thought we were hanging on by a tiny thread and we’re going to break up.’

Weeks earlier, Zara issued a grovelling apology once her affair came to light nearly a year after she appeared on the show.

Taking to Instagram Stories, she wrote: ‘A huge mistake I made a year ago has recently come to light and I want to face this head on. I don’t condone being unfaithful and I made a huge mistake at a time in my life where I was hugely selfish and immature.

She continued: ‘I believe I have learnt so much from my mistake. I want to apologise to my Sam for everything I have put him through, for the pain, the embarrassment, the anger and the hurt. All I want to do is make this right and I think the least he deserves is me being honest with myself and all of you. I love you Sam. Forever x’.’

In November 2020, Sam took Zara back following her heartfelt apologies and in January 2021, the newly back-together couple defied coronavirus rules by flying off to the Maldives and later moved inside together in Sam’s Chelsea home.

Work-wise, the pair have seen their respective careers boom since they’ve been back together, which pals believe was another major factor why they stayed together for so long.

Sam was crowned King of the Jungle in 2023 after winning I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! and Zara became the first Love Island star to bag a spot on Strictly Come Dancing the same year.

She finished 10th but her time on the show was later overshadowed by her partner Graziano Di Prima, 30,, who was kicked off the series for verbally and physically abusing Zara after she made a complaint over his behaviour.

Zara, who has also made several documentaries for the BBC, joined Sam in the audience for this year’s series where they supported their close friend Pete Wicks, 37.

Sam celebrated New Year’s Eve by partying with his ex-Made In Chelsea co-stars Reza Amiri-Garroussi, 36, and Josh Patterson, 34, at London’s Kensington Roof Gardens, downing shots, while Zara spent the evening at home with her cats.

They also had separate Christmases after Sam volunteered for a charity and Zara stayed with her close family in Upminster, Essex.

A source close to the couple told MailOnline: ‘Sam and Zara have ended their relationship. It’s been an incredibly difficult decision for them to part ways, they still care and have a lot of love for each other.

‘But after a tough year of working hard at their romance, they have split and will be focusing on their individual careers going forward into 2025.

‘There has been no scandal or fallout between them, it’s just the result of a difficult year, where they both had to spend a lot of time focused on their own projects.’

But even more hilarious is the fact that reportedly, seven couples are married who have met on various seasons of Big Brother, which is not designed to lead to marriage.

The only logical conclusion to draw is that if you want to create lasting relationships, a setup designed to get compatible people married doesn’t work as well as locking a bunch of young and horny randos in a house together for a couple of months, feeding them peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and not letting them leave.

As far as we know, Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce have never been locked in a house together. As Brittany Luse and crisis PR person Molly McPherson discussed on NPR’s It’s Been a Minute, Swift (the megastar) and Kelce (the Kansas City Chiefs tight end) are in a PR relationship that is going great guns. And maybe they’re in a real relationship, too. Who knows?

Really, truly, who knows? In the history of public relationships between celebrities, who among us can honestly say we have known who would last? Even the very most seemingly suspicious of relationships can flourish. Rob Mariano and Amber Brkich met on an all-star season of Survivor, and he proposed during the finale.

In front of Jeff Probst! CBS showed their wedding as a two-hour special. What could have seemed more phony? What could have seemed more like a bit they were doing for attention? Well, they’ve been married for almost 20 years, and they have four kids, so if it’s a bit, they’ve really committed to it.

In fairness, what kind of a relationship for Taylor Swift would not seem suspicious and publicity-seeking? It’s tempting to say “a relationship with an ordinary person,” but where in the world would Taylor Swift meet an ordinary person? On Hinge? At the grocery store? At a bar? According to the internet (and the story Kelce told on his podcast), he went to one of her shows in July. He wanted to give her a friendship bracelet with his number on it, but it didn’t work, and then the story got out there, and before you knew it, they were maybe/possibly/perhaps dating.

Now, certainly, you can choose to think this is absurd and that what, in fact happened was that her publicists and his publicists met in an underground lair beneath an active volcano, and after ceremonially burning some copies of Us Weekly while chanting “Co-ver! Co-ver! Co-ver!”, they schemed to put together this entire story to inure to everyone’s benefit, and Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce don’t even like each other. There is a long history of suspicion that celebrity couples are cooked up for publicity reasons, whether it’s because they’re in a project together or, more insidiously, because the true nature of somebody’s personal life has been deemed a potential liability.

But on the flip side, famous people dating other famous people makes a certain kind of logical sense, over and above the PR advantages. You would need a month-long orientation to date Taylor Swift if you came from any sort of anonymous background — you’d need to understand all the people on her team, how PR works, all kinds of things about confidentiality and safety and security, obligations she has, what it’s like to be in the press, what it’s like to be watched all the time … that’s a tall order.

Travis Kelce, on the other hand, had a dating show on E! back in 2016 called Catching Kelce, which, according to Vanity Fair, was being pretty successfully memory-holed until he connected with Swift. (His relationship with the woman he chose didn’t last.) After that, until 2022, he had a five-year on-and-off relationship with journalist and influencer Kayla Nicole. That connection certainly never attracted this level of attention, but it brought its own scrutiny. So he’s played the whole game before of drawing very fuzzy lines between public and private life. He’s even got his own fandom, though it’s dwarfed by hers.

You don’t have to believe Taylor Swift is any sort of victim — at all — to think that it’s functionally impossible for a normie to casually date a person as famous as she is who handles the rest of her life the way she does. Yes, she could have someone smuggled in and out of her hotel in a laundry cart, she could decline to comment on her personal life, and she could decide not to share herself with her fans beyond what happens on stage. But that would be a reversal of her entire oversharing strategy, in which her friends are part of her persona and her broken heart is part of her persona. This is exactly how Taylor Swift would be behaving if she were in a fake relationship with Travis Kelce, sure. But this is also exactly how Taylor Swift would be behaving if she were in a real relationship with Travis Kelce.

She lives this way. She shows up at things. She is the most animated person in the audience at any awards show. Given all that, dating somebody who’s already famous is both the most strategic thing for her to do and the most sensible thing for her to do. (And listen, she’s almost six feet tall. Maybe she likes a tall guy and was intrigued by the fact that a 6’5″ football player wanted to give her a friendship bracelet.)

True love can be pretty boneheaded. Relationships that develop in the silliest of circumstances can thrive, and what circumstances we think of as silly can change. There was a time when the idea of connecting with somebody online was treated like an embarrassment; now, it’s completely standard. People stay together who make no sense on paper, and sometimes that’s beautiful, and sometimes it’s devastating. (As Brian Krakow said in the very last episode of My So-Called Life with the regrettable but common nihilism of teenagers, “If you, like, analyze why certain people end up with certain other people, it’ll make you want to kill yourself.”)

It doesn’t matter to anybody else’s life whether this relationship is real or not, nor is it something you can figure out from watching her watching him or watching them leave a football game together. Maybe it’s PR. Maybe it’s lust. Maybe it’s going to be over in a month. Maybe it’s going to last. Maybe she’s going to write a song someday heavily hinting that somebody who wore pads and a helmet betrayed her. It’s a weird and beautiful and ultimately unimportant thing: Who knows?

The Kansas City Chiefs tight end, 34, was spotted walking through the crowd at his girlfriend’s concert on the first night of her world tour’s stop at the Accor Stadium on Friday.

In a video posted to X (formerly known as Twitter), Swift’s fans could be seen screaming as Kelce, who was dressed in a matching blue T-shirt and shorts, clapped and waved as he made his way to his spot to watch the show. Another video posted on X showed the tight end standing in the VIP tent at the stadium, clapping as the music swelled and the crowd cheered. Kelce — who even wore friendship bracelets, which Swifties have worn and swapped throughout the Eras Tour, on both arms — then smiled as he looked toward the stage.

Kelce wasn’t the only famous face in attendance at Friday’s show, with singers Katy Perry and Rita Ora spotted chatting in the crowd as they waited for the show to start. Ora’s husband, filmmaker Taika Waititi, also joined the duo.

The pop superstar’s first of four nights at the stadium kicked off shortly before 8 p.m. local time following a delay due to adverse weather. “Please note, due to weather, show start time has been delayed,” the Accor Stadium shared in a post on X. “Stay undercover until further notice and follow venue screens and staff instructions. Stay safe and remember to be kind to those around you.”

According to a post on X, Swift, also 34, addressed the weather as she took to the stage and told the crowd, “We have a little bit of a weather situation, a little bit of rain but I have never known an Aussie crowd that let anything get in the way!”

She later told her fans, “You’re really making me feel like tonight I get to play a sold out show for 81,000 people in Sydney.”

Swift’s support act, Sabrina Carpenter, was unable to perform her set due to the delay. According to local media outlet ABC, fans had earlier been evacuated due to lightning strikes near the stadium.
