BBC Breakfast was interrupted for a heartbreaking announcement just minutes into the programme. Jon Kay and Sally Nugent sat on the red sofa on Monday (September 21), presenting the day’s top stories to viewers across the country.
This included the de@th of Ken Hay, a Normandy veteran who passed away on Sunday (September 20) after a short illness at the age of 101.
Jon said: “Ken Hay, a Normany veteran and ambassador for the British Normandy Memorial in France has d!ed after a short illness at the age of 101.
“Ken was still a teenager when he landed in Normany in the weeks after D-Day in 1944. A father, grandfather and great-grandfather, his family says he will be greatly missed.”
Jon added that Mr Hay spent years visiting schools and sharing his wartime experiences with children, helping them understand the sacrifices made during the Second World War.

Footage of Mr Hay was then played, in which he could be heard saying: “It’s their opportunity, when they can’t ask a book a question, they can ask and we’ll do our best to answer them.
“I go round speaking to schools. They sit and listen. But then when you’re deluged with questions, you know how interested they are, and that’s what we’re here for.”
Jon added: “We spoke to him several times here on Breakfast and the team here sends our condolences to his sons, Chris and Jeremy, and his many, many friends.”
