BBC News’ usual programming was interrupted for a breaking news announcement. It was reported that 21 people had been killed in a tragic bus accident in Egypt. During Wednesday’s broadcast, the BBC presenter Catherine Byaruhanga announced: “At least 21 people have been killed in a bus crash in east of the country, that’s according to Egypt’s health ministry. Earlier, we had reports that 28 people were injured in the Red Sea towns between Dahab and Nuweiba in the South Sinai Governorate as part of that crash.
“We had the de@th toll at 16; it’s now risen to 21, and earlier reports say that 21 people were in the bus crash in Eastern Egypt.” In a statement, the head of Egypt’s healthcare authority, Dr Ahmed Al-Sabki, said that the injured were initially taken to a local medical centre. Now, a number of them have since been transferred to the Sharm el-Sheikh International, Saint Catherine, and Al-Fayrouz hospitals.

The Health minister stated that all measures are being taken “to provide the highest level of medical care to the injured, to provide all necessary supplies and medicines, and to maintain continuous coordination with the relevant authorities in South Sinai Governorate”.
Abdel Ghaffar told the press that he directed Dr Ahmed Al-Sabki, Head of the Health Care Authority, “to provide the highest level of medical care to the injured, ensure the provision of all necessary supplies and medications, and maintain ongoing coordination with the relevant authorities in South Sinai Governorate”.
As a spokesperson for the ministry added that “all medical teams are operating at full capacity to handle the incident with utmost efficiency and speed”.
The ministry “extends its sincere condolences to the families of the victims and wishes a speedy recovery to all the injured”, the statement added.

Dahab is around 50 miles north of Sharm el-Sheikh. The southern Sinai peninsula and remains a popular destination for tourism, especially for those looking to experience diving and snorkelling in the Red Sea.
Dahab, on the Gulf of Aqaba, is known for its golden beaches, while Nuweibaa is a coastal resort which is popular among backpackers.
Although the popular area attracts visitors from around the world, deadly road accidents are common across Egypt, with the authorities reporting nearly 6,000 de@ths in 2025.
Just last month, 18 people were killed, and 30 people were left injured when two lorries collided in the north-eastern Ismailia governorate.
