Yet just four months later, Tess and Vernon appeared together on a family holiday with their daughters, Phoebe and Amber, in scenes that seemed remarkably warm and united.
Now body language expert Judi James has taken a closer look at the family photograph shared by Tess and claimed the image could reveal far more about their relationship than words ever could.
Tess and Vernon put on a united front
Analysing the photograph, Judi suggested the former couple appeared determined to project an image of family harmony despite the very public breakdown of their marriage.
“These look like understandably brand-sensitive body language poses, projecting family harmony and affection despite the fact that the marriage has famously and very publicly broken down,” she explained.
According to James, both Tess and Vernon have long-established television careers and therefore have a public image to protect.
She suggested that appearing emotionally consistent and united could be particularly important for the pair as they navigate life after their separation.
But the expert also spotted something particularly striking in the way the family positioned themselves.
“Vernon is at the centre of the pose,” James observed, pointing to his “arms fully splayed” in what she described as a gesture of confidence, leadership and protection.
His arms appeared to stretch behind the group, creating what James called a “wings” effect.
Vernon remains at the heart of the family
The body language expert suggested the pose could indicate that Vernon has retained an important position within the family dynamic, despite no longer being Tess’s husband.
“That ‘wings’ spread seems to send out a signal that they are all one unified group with Vernon at the centre of the women’s attention,” James said.
She also noted that Vernon faced the camera directly while Tess and their daughters appeared to lean towards him.
Tess’s positioning was particularly revealing, according to James.
“Tess especially angles herself to join his pose, hinting at a sense of ‘no hard feelings’ towards him,” she said.
The observation may fuel speculation that, despite their marriage coming to an end, the former couple could have successfully drawn a line under any bitterness and created a new relationship centred around their family.
‘They all look keen to boost him’
Perhaps the most telling part of the analysis came when James examined the position of Phoebe and Amber.
The daughters appeared to surround their father, creating a visual impression that they were comfortable with Vernon remaining firmly within the centre of their family life.
“The daughters look happy to ‘surround’ their dad too,” James explained.
She suggested that their positioning appeared to communicate that they were happy for Vernon to retain his role “at the heart of the family group”.
The expert went even further, saying they appeared keen to “boost him” and “contain him there in that role”.
For many separated couples, continuing to take family holidays together can be difficult. But Tess and Vernon’s behaviour suggests they may be determined to make co-parenting work despite the end of their marriage.
A new chapter after 22 years
Their reunion comes after reports that Vernon has been making major changes to his own life.
The Mirror previously reported that the presenter had purchased a £3 million property around 15 minutes from the former family home he shared with Tess and their daughters in Buckinghamshire.
The move would allow Vernon to establish a separate life while remaining close enough to play an active role in his daughters’ lives.
Tess, meanwhile, has reportedly been concentrating on her career following her departure from Strictly Come Dancing.
While the photograph cannot reveal what the former couple truly feel behind closed doors, Judi James’ analysis paints a picture of two people who appear determined to preserve a sense of family unity.
