The Coronation Street fan-favourite was treating a diabetic episode when he collapsed and was found with a needle in his leg before tragically dying.

A tragic health complication claimed the life of a beloved Coronation Street star, after the actor had previously suffered from memory loss and frequent episodes where he would ‘fall into a trance’.
The actor was rushed to hospital following the fatal health scare, ultimately passing away from natural causes as a result of the condition at the age of 56.
Iain Rogerson was a much-loved fixture on Coronation Street from 2002 until 2004, appearing on the soap that famously holds the Guinness World Record for the world’s longest-running TV soap opera.
Iain portrayed Harry Flagg on the cobbles, a Rovers Return employee who memorably secured the position after remarking on how ‘unclean’ the iconic pub appeared.

Life and career
Born in 1960 in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, the cherished actor spent the latter years of his life in North Wales’ Church View, Chirk, near Oswestry.
He was best recognised for his endearing portrayal of Harry Flagg on Coronation Street, having featured in 121 episodes of the programme between 2002 and 2004.
Iain took on the role of the Manchester Airport cleaner in 2002, with his character accepting Fred Elliott’s offer of full-time employment at the Rovers Return Inn.
According to the Corriepedia fansite’s character biography, Iain’s character Harry memorably secured his position on Corrie’s cobbles after “having visited the Rovers Return Inn” and remarking on “how unclean it appeared”.
Harry subsequently offered to clean the pub in exchange for several pints and £10. Throughout his time on Corrie, Iain’s character became romantically involved with fan favourite Eileen Grimshaw, portrayed by Sue Cleaver.
Regrettably, Iain’s character was amongst several casualties when the show underwent cuts in 2004, yet the affection for both Iain and Harry proved so strong that supporters established an online campaign demanding his return – attracting signatures from admirers as distant as Canada and New Zealand.

While Coronation Street producers indicated the ‘door will be left open for him to return’, neither Iain nor Harry ever made their way back to Corrie’s legendary cobbles.
Coronation Street wasn’t Iain’s sole appearance in quintessentially British television. His credits also included Emmerdale, Casualty, Heartbeat, The Bill, Doctors, Bloomin’ Marvellous, Drop the de@d Donkey, and Peak Practice.
His cinematic work brought him to the silver screen in productions including Chariots of Fire, Mike Bassett: England Manager, To Kill A King, and Bedazzled.
Following his passing on October 13, 2017, his former representatives, CV Actor Management, announced the news on X (formerly Twitter), stating: “It is with great sadness we say goodbye to our friend and client former @itvcorrie actor Iain Rogerson.”
Tragic de@th
Iain is understood to have passed away following a suspected insulin overdose, which triggered a series of ultimately fatal complications.
During Iain’s inquest, John Gittins, coroner for North Wales East and Central, recorded a verdict of de@th by natural causes. Coroner Gittins stated he believed Iain had been attempting to manage a diabetic episode when he collapsed at home.

The coroner confirmed, however, that he did not consider Iain’s de@th to have been caused by the accidental overdose. Medical professionals reported that Iain sustained brain damage from oxygen deprivation linked to the insulin overdose. The coroner’s final verdict was de@th by natural causes.
According to Diabetes.co.uk, Iain was discovered by his sister with an insulin needle in his leg and was immediately taken to Wrexham Maelor Hospital in north-east Wales, where he remained until his de@th on October 13, 2017.
The inquest revealed that Iain’s diabetes was gradually devastating his life. Both his mental and physical wellbeing had been severely affected and declined to such an extent that the actor could no longer learn or recall lines, and he frequently fell into a trance, according to Iain’s father.
The 56-year-old had developed type 3 diabetes and pancreatitis due to excessive alcohol consumption earlier in his life. Tragically, despite Iain having reportedly ceased heavy drinking years before his de@th, the lasting effects included memory impairment, which rendered it impossible for the formerly prolific actor to secure acting roles.
The inquest heard Iain’s father Raymond reveal that his son frequently ‘fell into a trance’. The bereaved father honoured his son during the hearing, stating: “We are so proud of our son and the achievements he had on stage and screen.”
Recording a conclusion of de@th by natural causes, coroner Gittins stated: “He was a man who had clearly been struggling with mental and physical health issues. He had a serious diabetic condition due to his past excessive consumption of alcohol.
“I don’t even think this was an accident due to an overdose. I believe that this was a hypoglycaemic episode that he was seeking to treat and collapsed while doing it.”

The inquest also learnt that Iain had divorced his wife around 2008 and faced financial difficulties.
Tributes to the beloved actor
Iain was a treasured figure within the community and amongst television and film professionals.
The Leader reports staff and patrons of the Stanton House Inn in Holyhead Road, Chirk, confirmed that Iain was popular in the area.
Teresa Payne, who worked at Stanton House, informed the publication: “He used to come in here – he was known around here as Harry Flagg. He used to like to tell his tales of when he was on set and he was very friendly and chatty.”
Tom Randall commented: “He enjoyed his life and he was well known here. He wasn’t a bad lad at all.”
Actor Trevor Dwyer-Lynch, who appeared alongside Iain on Coronation Street, wrote: “Sad and gutted to her about Iain Rogerson RIP a gentleman both on and off set when we worked together @itvcorrie #iainrogerson.”
