BBC World Cup commentator is mocked for mixing up Pharrell Williams with A$AP Rocky and calling him ‘AKA Rocky’ in ‘cringe’ moment

BBC World Cup commentator Guy Mowbray was left red-faced after he mistook Pharrell Williams for A$AP Rocky during the final on Sunday night.

The moment happened when the camera panned to some of the A-listers in the stands at the New Jersey stadium as they watched Spain take on Argentina.

In a further gaffe, Guy called A$AP Rocky, AKA Rocky which prompted fans to mock the blunder on social media.

In the clip, Guy commented on a close-up of Pharrell, who was sitting behind Rihanna and A$AP: ‘I think that’s AKA Rocky, or A$AP Rocky, sorry,’

‘Never heard someone be so wrong yet say it with so much confidence,’ one viewer wrote on X in direct response to a clip of the embarrassing moment.

‘Sometimes, it’s best to say nothing at all,’ another wrote about the incident.

‘Not sure what’s funnier. Guy Mowbray calling ASAP Rocky ‘AKA’, or the fact that he was actually looking at Pharrell Williams,’ one user joked.

‘I was distracted and looked up last minute when he said ‘AKA Rocky’ and then corrected himself… But even in the briefest glimpse I was like… “I’m sure that was Pharrell…”

‘The guy that sang Happy and Blurred Lines? Oh you mean AKA Rocky?

However, some fans noted that A$AP Rocky – and partner Rihanna – were in fact seated just in front of Williams, explaining the commentator’s mistake – given he was likely given a list of attendees and their respective seats in the stadium.

Pharrell is a 13-time Grammy-winning artist and producer best known for his hits Happy, Get Lucky (with Daft Punk), and Blurred Lines (with Robin Thicke).

A$AP Rocky, whose real name is Rakim Athelston Mayers, is a hip-hop artist who is in a relationship with Rihanna.

Fox commentators also mistakenly identified Matt Damon as Brad Pitt when cameras panned to a VIP suite at MetLife Stadium.

‘Brad Pitt also among the fans here,’ the commentator said before quickly correcting himself.

X users took delight in the hilarious switch-up: ‘Guess [there] are worse guys to be mistaken for,’ one wrote.

Matt was at the World Cup with his wife Luciana Barroso, who hails from Argentina and was decked out in blue and white.

Spain triumphed 1-0 over Lionel Messi’s Argentina in extra time after a 106th-minute strike from forward Ferran Torres at MetLife Stadium.

The likes of Beyonce, Rihanna, Kylie Jenner, Tom Cruise, Dua Lipa and the Beckhams all lent their A-list power to the ‘beautiful game’ at what was arguably the most star-studded football event of all time.

Other actors in attendance included Jon Hamm, Adrien Brody and Blake Lively, who has been largely missing from the spotlight following her former friend Taylor Swift‘s wedding to Travis Kelce earlier this month.
