Princess Kate made a surprise public appearance in Essex as she marked Addiction Awareness Week — and brought Prince William into the conversation with a rare comment about one of his passions.
The Princess of Wales visited the Forward Growing initiative at Garon Park in Southend, where people affected by addiction are given opportunities to spend time outdoors and take part in gardening as part of their recovery.
Kate has been Royal Patron of The Forward Trust since 2021, with the charity supporting people recovering from addiction and helping them rebuild their lives. Its Addiction Awareness Week campaign this year runs from September 19 to 25.
During the visit, Catherine highlighted the role that nature and outdoor spaces can play in supporting recovery.
Kate Brings William Into Gardening Conversation
While being shown around the garden, the Princess admitted that her own gardening knowledge was limited.
She then suggested Prince William would have been particularly at home during the visit.
“I should have my husband here; he knows a lot,” Kate said, before revealing: “He’s really passionate.”
Asked about her own gardening experience, Catherine modestly admitted she knew “a little bit”.
The comment offered a small glimpse into William’s interests away from royal duties while Kate continued speaking with people taking part in the Forward Growing programme.
The initiative uses gardening and access to green space as part of its work with people recovering from addiction.
Kate praised the environment while hearing directly from those involved in the programme.
Princess Highlights Nature and Recovery
The appearance came as The Forward Trust promoted its wider Addiction Awareness Week campaign, which aims to encourage more open conversations around addiction and reduce the stigma that can prevent people from seeking help.
The charity says its work focuses on helping people affected by addiction move forward with greater stability, including support around family, employment, housing and rebuilding their lives.
Catherine’s visit placed particular emphasis on the outdoors and the way gardening can provide structure, connection and a calmer environment for those in recovery.
The Princess spent time speaking with people involved in the programme and learning more about their experiences.
Her reference to William came naturally during those discussions, as she admitted he would have known more than she did about the gardening taking place around them.
Appearance Comes During Busy Week for Royal Family
Kate’s outing also came during another heavily scrutinised week for the Royal Family following the publication of Earl Spencer’s memoir, Swan Song: Diana, My Sister.
The book has generated controversy over a number of claims involving King Charles and the events surrounding Princess Diana’s death, with Buckingham Palace publicly disputing parts of Spencer’s account.
The original report linked Kate’s comment about William to separate claims that recent royal controversies had affected him personally. However, it provided no verified medical information establishing any impact on the Prince of Wales’s health, so those claims should not be treated as confirmed.
William himself has not publicly linked his health to the Spencer controversy.
Kate Keeps Focus on Addiction Awareness
Rather than addressing the wider royal headlines, Catherine kept the focus of her Southend visit on addiction recovery and the people using the Forward Trust programme.
Her appearance gave her an opportunity to hear directly from those using gardening and outdoor activity as part of their recovery while highlighting the charity’s message that addiction should be discussed with greater understanding and less stigma.
But one lighter moment stood out.
Surrounded by plants and people passionate about gardening, Kate admitted there was another royal who might have been especially suited to the visit.
As she put it: “I should have my husband here.”
And with her revelation that William is “really passionate” about gardening, the Princess offered an unexpected personal detail during an otherwise serious engagement.
