Although Katya, 37, and Neil, 44, were able to return to dancing on Friday, concerns were reportedly raised behind the scenes over whether they would recover in time for the start of the competition.

The setback could also have wider consequences for both professionals as producers prepare to decide which dancers will be paired with celebrities.

Neil may have particular reason to worry after going without a celebrity partner last year.

A source told The Sun that the professional dancers are currently working through an intense filming schedule as producers prepare the group performances that will be shown throughout the series.

“The pro dancers are under the cosh for filming the group dances, which are played throughout the series, and have a hectic schedule,” the insider said.

According to the source, problems escalated when Katya and Neil were injured at roughly the same time.

“There was a real crisis on set when both Neil and Katya were injured at the same time and there were concerns they wouldn’t be able to recover in time for the series start in two weeks.”

The exact nature of their injuries was not disclosed.

Missing the pre-recorded routines was said to be especially disappointing because those performances provide professionals with valuable screen time regardless of whether they receive a celebrity partner.

“They were gutted to miss out on the group dances as it guarantees them screen time if they don’t get a partner, which Neil often doesn’t,” the source claimed.

Celebrity Partner Hopes Under Pressure

Katya and Neil’s return to rehearsals is an encouraging sign, but reports suggest the interruption could still complicate their chances of securing celebrity partners.

That possibility comes at an already uncertain time for several established Strictly professionals.

Five new dancers have joined the 2026 line-up, with insiders claiming the fresh arrivals have made some longer-serving members nervous about whether there will be enough celebrity partnerships to go around.

For Neil, the competition for a place could feel particularly significant after he failed to receive a celebrity partner during the previous series.
