Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are reportedly “excited” to be back in Britain and are looking to rebuild ties with UK charities as they begin a new chapter following their return from the United States.
According to a report in The Sunday Times, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex want to become more meaningfully involved with charitable work in Britain, with Meghan particularly interested in reconnecting with organisations she previously supported.
Royal correspondent Roya Nikkhah reported that the couple are also expected to allow greater media access around some of their charitable work, despite their past criticism of sections of the British press.
Harry, meanwhile, is said to be in “a different headspace” compared with previous years.
The Duke is expected to take part in a charity skydive later this month before appearing at the WellChild Awards.
Meghan Eyes Return to Smart Works
Meghan is reportedly considering a renewed role with Smart Works, a charity that provides interview clothing and coaching to unemployed women.
The organisation was the only UK charity with which she maintained ties after she and Harry left Britain.
A source told The Sunday Times that Meghan will “look to rekindle that relationship, where she can get back involved in a more meaningful way now that she’s back here.”
Whether Meghan will expand her work to other organisations remains unclear.
The Royalist noted that her public standing in Britain has become more complicated since the Sussexes stepped away from royal duties and Harry later published his memoir, Spare.
The outlet questioned whether additional charities would be willing to work closely with Meghan, but no organisation was identified as having rejected or accepted a future partnership.
Couple Reportedly Ready for More Public Charity Work
The Sussexes’ reported plans suggest their UK return could involve a more visible charitable presence.
While they are not returning as working royals, the couple have continued to focus on charitable causes independently since moving to the United States.
The latest report suggests they now want to reconnect with British organisations and establish a more substantial role in the country.
That could see Meghan photographed during charity engagements and the couple working with media outlets they have previously criticised.
The shift comes after years of tension surrounding their departure from royal life.
Harry and Meghan’s reputation in the UK has been affected by their public criticism of the Royal Family and by the revelations contained in Harry’s memoir.
However, reports surrounding their return have increasingly suggested that Harry in particular is approaching Britain from a different perspective.
Security Remains Major Concern
Despite their reported enthusiasm, security continues to hang over the family’s return.
The Sussexes are said to be waiting for confirmation from the Home Office over whether they will receive permanent taxpayer-funded police protection while living in Britain.
Their children’s school and the location of the family’s rented home have both been kept private for security reasons.
The property is believed to be outside London.
A friend of the Sussex family told The Telegraph that school runs are “absolutely the biggest area of concern” because of the predictable nature of the journey.
Former Metropolitan Police protection officer Scott Hamer also said school runs can be particularly difficult to secure.
“The whole point of protection is to keep the diary as tight as possible, to ensure people who might want to do bad things do not have the opportunity to do so,” he explained.
“With the school run, you can vary the route as much as you like but the start and end point will almost always be the same. It’s really, really difficult.”
Another report claimed King Charles wants the Sussexes to regain security and is concerned about his grandchildren being left without adequate protection.
That claim has not been publicly confirmed by Buckingham Palace.
For now, Harry and Meghan’s return appears to involve two parallel priorities: rebuilding a meaningful charitable presence in Britain while resolving the practical security questions surrounding their family life.
The couple are reportedly enthusiastic about the opportunities ahead, but how extensive their public role becomes will depend on how those issues unfold.
