Lorraine was hit with furious backlash as fans flooded the show with complaints about Paul Burrell. The former butler to Princess Diana appeared on Wednesday’s (September 10) edition of the programme to discuss his new book, which goes into detail about what it was like working with the Royal Family.

“People don’t realise that I stood beside Queen Elizabeth II for eleven years before I moved on to Diana. They know me by my relationship with Princess Diana but now with the Queen so I thought, now that she’s passed, I wanted to put my story out there, and it is a story of love for these two incredible, unique, inspirational women of our time,” he told Lorraine.

Paul admitted the Queen was like a “second mum” to him, admitting he “saved her” several times.

Explaining the sacrifices he made, Paul continued: “My life so was so intertwined with theirs that I’d invested everything I had, my home, my pension, my livelihood, children’s schools – everything.”

Paul also mentioned Diana’s turbulent marriage to King Charles and her desire not to get divorced.

“She shouldn’t have been there. Wrong place, wrong man, wrong destination, everything was wrong. There were very bad vibes around that, but it happened, and changed so many lives in the process, including William and Harry’s.

Paul went on to repeat the accusation Prince Harry made towards him, in which he claimed Paul had been selling Diana’s clothes in America.

Prior to the accusations, Paul had a meeting with Prince William and Harry, where they acknowledged how much he loved their mother.

Paul claimed his relationship with the royals also meant he neglected his own family, but the I’m A Celebrity star insisted he is making up for it now.

His appearance on the programme sparked heavy criticism from viewers, who fumed that he is simply using his previous relations with the Royal Family to make money.

One raged: “Why is this grifter being given airtime? He hasn’t had any contact with the Royal Family in decades. He can say anything and the Queen can’t answer. Horrible man clearly running out of money so invents events which never happened.”

Another fumed: “Very distasteful to give him airtime. @reallorraine clearly doesn’t believe a word he is saying so why give him the platform – disappointing.”

A third echoed: “Why do they continue to have him on TV? The stupid man comes across as being ill, pretending he’s still in on their comings and goings. Deluded.”

A fourth demanded: “Get this deluded stupid man off the telly!”
