King Charles Reportedly ‘Very Excited’ by Harry’s UK Return as Archie and Lilibet Move Closer
King Charles is reportedly delighted that Prince Harry and his family are back living in Britain, with a former royal butler suggesting the move could finally give the monarch a chance to become more involved in the lives of Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
Harry returned to the UK last week with Meghan Markle and their two children after six years living in the United States.
The King has not publicly commented on the family’s relocation, but former royal butler Grant Harrold believes Charles will see the move as deeply significant on a personal level.
Harrold, who worked for Charles when he was Prince of Wales between 2004 and 2011, said the monarch is likely to be especially pleased that his grandchildren are now much closer.
“Like any grandparent, the King will be very excited to have Archie and Lilibet close again,” he told the Daily Express.
Charles Could Play a ‘Larger Role’
According to Harrold, the distance between the King and Harry’s children may have been particularly difficult because Charles has had limited opportunities to watch them grow up.
“He hasn’t had a chance to really see them grow up, so he will be very happy to play a larger role in their lives,” he said.
Harrold also suggested the King may have been conscious of how much time he had missed with Archie and Lilibet while they were based in California.
“I imagine it’s been very hard for him to know how much he’s missed out on,” he added.
“He would never have wanted to be an absent grandparent.”
The former royal household employee described Charles as a man who places considerable importance on family.
“He’s a very caring man, and his family means a lot to him,” Harrold said.
“All things aside, he would want to play an active role in his grandchildren’s lives.”
He added that Charles would not want Archie and Lilibet growing up with unanswered questions about their relationship with their grandfather.
“He wouldn’t want them growing up having questions, so this move is very important to the King.”
Harry and Meghan Begin New UK Chapter
The Sussexes’ move marks a major change after six years based in America following their departure from senior royal duties in 2020.
Although Britain may not necessarily remain their permanent home forever, reports suggest the family intends to stay for the foreseeable future.
Archie, seven, and Lilibet, five, have already been enrolled at British schools, a move that suggests the family is preparing for a significant period of life in the UK.
Harry and Meghan are also said to have moved into a private, non-royal residence believed to be outside London.
The exact location of the property is not expected to be disclosed for security reasons, and the same applies to the children’s school.
Despite returning to Britain, Harry and Meghan are not expected to resume duties as working members of the Royal Family.
They are instead understood to be planning to live as private citizens.
A Possible New Chapter for Charles and His Grandchildren
Harry’s relationship with his father has experienced considerable strain since the Duke stepped away from royal duties.
But the family’s return could create new opportunities for private contact, particularly between Charles and his grandchildren.
At the time of the report, it was believed the King had not yet seen Harry, Meghan, Archie or Lilibet since their relocation.
Harrold’s comments are his interpretation rather than a direct statement from the monarch.
Still, they suggest that whatever difficulties remain between Harry and the wider Royal Family, Charles may view the return of Archie and Lilibet as a separate and deeply personal positive.
For the King, having his youngest son’s family living nearby could offer something he has had little chance to enjoy in recent years: the opportunity to be a more present grandfather.
