Good Morning Britain viewers were quick to voice their complaints as they criticised Chancellor Rachel Reeves. The backlash came after the ITV programme reported that the politician had arrived in Washington for talks at the International Monetary Fund. This follows a warning from the IMF that Britons grappling with the cost of living crisis are set to face the highest inflation rate among all G7 nations.”
Joining presenters Susanna Reid and Martin Lewis was Charlotte Hawkins, who recognised this news is a “blow” for the chancellor in the lead up to November’s budget.
“Yeah, more than that. A blow to the government’s big promise to make us all better off and put more money in people’s pockets because inflation means things getting more expensive more quickly,” correspondent Louisa James said.
“That is particularly food and energy prices at the moment. The IMF says it is worse here than in any of the other G7 countries. It also means that it’s harder for the Bank of England to cut interest rates and make mortgages cheaper.”
Seeing the difficulties the government is up against, Louisa explained: “All of this could be a challenge for next month’s budget because it could make it harder for Rachel Reeves to fill the black hole, estimated to be anywhere between 20 and 50 billion pounds.”
The newsreader added: “Rachel Reeves has told Sky News that she is looking at both tax rises and spending cuts in the budget and that is despite the government’s promise, pre the election, not to put up taxes for working people.”
The update left fans furious as they expressed their frustrations online.
One wrote: “This is not good. I simply can’t afford to live and this just makes matters worse tbh, between my energy firm and the retailers they’re gonna finish me off I swear.”

Another raged: “The country’s finances are broken, UK is broken! People don’t have enough money in their pockets to spend because it’s all being taken away by the cost of living. Govt policies have caused this. Over-taxing, under-investing has got the UK in this constant decline.”
“This government are shambles, the PM is an international embarrassment who wants an Orwellian like society in Britain, we need them out,” a third said.
Another viewer claimed that Rachel Reeves and the “inept” government have “crashed” the UK economy.
“Rachel from accounts hasn’t a clue about finances!!! Yet is determined to make us all poorer. Our food and energy bills are the highest in Europe??? Ripoff Britain. This Gov is working for big business not for people,” echoed a fifth.
