He reached into his jacket and placed a set of keys on the table.
“The apartment in Valle belongs to both of us. I can arrange money. Enough for you to—”
“Stop.”
He did.
“You think this is about money?”
His face said yes before his mouth could lie.
I almost felt sorry for him.
Almost.
“I want a public apology,” I said. “From you, your mother, and Camila. I want the accusation withdrawn in writing. I want every guest who received your family’s version to receive the truth. I want the security footage from the mansion delivered unedited to my lawyer. I want a divorce under terms Mariana will provide. And I want you to listen carefully to this part.”
I stood.
My knees still hurt, but I stood straight.
“I want the rural girls’ literacy foundation we discussed before our marriage fully funded from your personal accounts, not your family foundation, for ten years. Not as charity. As restitution.”
He stared.
“That’s excessive.”
Mariana leaned back, smiling.
Teresa whispered, “Idiot.”
I said, “Then we go to court. And television. And perhaps someone asks why your mother’s Cartier necklace was insured for three times its market value two weeks before she accused me of stealing it.”
That information had come from Mariana the night before. She had nearly danced when she found it.
Alejandro went pale.
“You don’t understand what you’re doing.”
“No,” I said. “For the first time, I do.”
He looked at me for a long moment.
Then, quietly, “My mother will never agree.”
I picked up the keys he had placed on the table and held them out to him.
“Then go home and ask her how much a ruined name costs.”
The public apology came three days later.
It was not beautiful. Such things rarely are. Doña Graciela sat between Alejandro and Camila in a room chosen by public relations consultants to look humble while costing more than my mother’s house. Her face seemed carved from hatred and powder.
“Our family deeply regrets the treatment suffered by Mrs. Elena Salazar Montepegro during a private family event,” she read.

I watched the video once.
Then I closed the laptop.
Mariana looked disappointed. “You don’t want to replay the part where Graciela looks like she swallowed glass?”
“No.”
“You are more merciful than I am.”
“No,” I said. “I’m just tired.”
The divorce took six months.
The foundation took eight.
We named it Lucía.
Teresa insisted. I resisted at first, afraid of stealing grief that was not mine, but Teresa said names unused become another kind of grave.
The Lucía Aranda Foundation opened its first reading room in Parras the following spring in a renovated municipal building with blue doors and imperfect tiles. My mother cried when she saw the shelves. She tried to hide it by reorganising picture books alphabetically. On opening day, I wore a simple white dress.

Teresa stood beside me with silver hair pinned at the nape of her neck, one hand resting on the plaque bearing her sister’s name. Mariana arrived late with boxes of donated laptops and a complaint about the highway. Raúl brought sweet bread. My mother made coffee strong enough to revive the dead and possibly interrogate them.
A journalist asked if I felt justice had been served.
I looked through the open door at a little girl sitting cross-legged with a book larger than her lap. She was sounding out words slowly, fiercely, as if each one were a door she intended to kick open.
“No,” I said.
The journalist blinked.
“No?”
“Justice is not a document or a payment or an apology recorded by lawyers. Those things matter. But justice is also what grows in the space where shame used to live.”
I touched the edge of the blue door.
“This is a beginning.”
That evening, after everyone left, I stood alone in the reading room.
Sunset lay gold across the tables. Dust floated in the light. Outside, the vineyards darkened towards the mountains. The air smelled of paper, coffee, rain on dry earth.
My phone buzzed.
A message from an unknown number.
I almost ignored it.
Then I opened it.
A photograph filled the screen.
Doña Graciela, younger by nearly three decades, standing beside a man I did not know. Between them was a woman with frightened eyes. Teresa’s sister, I guessed before I read the text beneath.
