Mark Labbett’s co-stars constantly have to tell him not to do one thing on Beat The Chasers due to his “big massive ego”, a fellow Chaser has claimed. Darragh Ennis, also known as ‘The Menace’ on the hit ITV quiz show, disclosed the behind-the-scenes tidbit on a recent episode of the Dempsey’s Dozen podcast, in which he shared that Mark gets “genuinely mad” when he loses.

Mark (The Beast) and Darragh share their Chaser duties with Shaun Wallace (The Dark Destroyer), Anne Hegerty (The Governess), Paul Sinha (The Sinnerman), and Jenny Ryan (The Vixen).

During the chat, the host noted an incident on The Chase when Mark ran out of time with a number of questions remaining. As a result, he was left “p****d off” and “actually walked off”, as he pointed out that the Chaser “takes it seriously”.

Darragh agreed that they “do take it seriously” and that Mark was the “worst loser in the world”, although he claimed that the Chaser wouldn’t mind him saying as much, adding that he “genuinely hates it” and it’s “not an act”.

He said: “He might pantomime it up a little, but he’s genuinely mad, really angry, a sore loser who kicks off, and then, five minutes later, he’s fine. You know, he just…he does not like losing; he is ultra competitive.

“When we’re doing Beat The Chasers, we have to keep telling him, ‘Mark, stop buzzing in so early’, because if he hasn’t answered a question in a while, he wants to get in there because he’s got like this big massive ego and he wants to impress.”

In 2024, a contestant claimed that Mark was so angry when he lost, he actually punched the ITV set. Ballet dancer Wayne Sleep took on The Beast in 2018 alongside Emmerdale’s Dominic Brunt, Good Morning Britain’s Charlotte Hawkins and funnyman Ricky Tomlinson.

Speaking to the Daily Star, he said that he wanted to appear on the show again, disclosing that Mark was “fuming” when he beat him and “punched the scenery as he left”.

He said: “I said to Bradley, ‘Is he always like that?’ and he said ‘he’s furious because he’s been beaten by a ballet boy’. He didn’t speak to us much afterwards either.”

Meanwhile, Wayne added that if he had the opportunity to appear on the quiz show again, he would like to take on Anne, so “let’s make it happen”.

In a slightly different scenario, Mark recently walked off Beat The Chasers (Sunday, August 31) after losing £100,000 to lucky contestant Gavin, joking: “I’ll get my coat”.

He declared that the other offers were “stingy,” then informed the contestant that they would reduce their time to 40 seconds and offer him the chance to play for the massive prize.

Ultimately, Gavin won with four seconds left. Host Bradley Walsh said: “Beastie, you’d best leave now.” Mark said: “Firstly, well played, Sir. Secondly, I’ll get my coat!” The Beast then left.
