Norwegian Royals Cancel Engagements as King Harald’s Condition Becomes ‘Very Serious’

Norway’s royal family has cancelled official engagements following a deeply concerning update on the health of King Harald V.

The 89-year-old monarch has remained at Rikshospitalet, Norway’s National Hospital in Oslo, since August 17. The Norwegian Royal Court announced on Thursday that his condition was now considered “very serious”, marking a troubling change from reports only days earlier that he was stable.

The King was initially admitted after doctors became concerned about side effects linked to his treatment for haemolytic anaemia.

During that treatment, Harald developed fluid retention and required further hospital care. His condition then deteriorated after a bacterial infection was discovered in his bloodstream.

The Palace previously confirmed that the King had been placed on antibiotics and was responding to the treatment. However, the latest update indicates that his health has since taken a more serious turn.

Palace announces worrying change

The Royal Court has not provided further details explaining the severity of the King’s condition.

Royal Central reported that Queen Sonja and Crown Prince Haakon had cancelled their forthcoming engagements following the announcement.

Haakon has served as Regent during recent weeks while his father has been unable to perform his constitutional duties.

The sudden changes to the royal diary suggest that both the Queen and Crown Prince intend to remain close to Harald during the coming days, although the Palace has not formally confirmed their private arrangements.

Crown Prince Haakon and his wife, Crown Princess Mette-Marit, were seen arriving at the Oslo hospital on Thursday morning.

Their appearance came as concern grew over the monarch’s health and Norwegians waited for further information from the Palace.

King Harald has faced serious health problems before

Harald has previously overcome several significant medical issues, including infections and heart surgery.

Those health problems have increasingly required him to step back from public duties, leaving Crown Prince Haakon to assume more responsibilities on behalf of the monarchy.

The latest hospital admission has now placed the heir to the throne in an especially difficult position, both as Regent and as a son concerned about his father.

It comes just two days after Haakon marked his 25th wedding anniversary with Crown Princess Mette-Marit.

The couple have already endured another painful health crisis this year involving the Crown Princess.

Mette-Marit’s chronic pulmonary fibrosis reportedly reached a life-threatening stage before she underwent a lung transplant. She is still recovering from the procedure.

The Crown Prince and Princess’s arrival at Rikshospitalet on Thursday added to fears that the King’s condition had worsened significantly.

Royal duties placed on hold

With Harald remaining in hospital, Haakon has continued carrying the constitutional responsibilities normally performed by the King.

However, the cancellation of his engagements indicates that the royal family’s immediate focus has shifted towards the monarch and his ongoing treatment.

Queen Sonja has also reportedly cleared her official schedule, allowing her to remain available while doctors care for her husband.

Harald ascended the Norwegian throne in 1991 and has remained an important and widely recognised figure throughout more than three decades as monarch.

His advancing age and repeated health problems have led Haakon to take a more prominent role in recent years, but the King has continued returning to duties whenever his condition allowed.

For now, no timetable has been given for his discharge or possible return to public life.

The most recent official description of his health remains “very serious”. Until the Norwegian Royal Court releases another update, the King will continue receiving treatment in Oslo with his closest family nearby and royal engagements placed on hold.
