Good Morning Britain viewers were quick to react after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s latest clash with the Royal Family dominated the ITV programme just minutes after it began.
Susanna Reid and Tom Swarbrick returned to the breakfast show on Thursday as another development surrounding the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s return to Britain took centre stage.
This time, the row focused on Uganda’s decision to withdraw from the Invictus Games and claims from people close to Harry that guidance issued on behalf of King Charles may have contributed to the move.
Uganda announced its withdrawal on Wednesday, with General Muhoozi Kainerugaba saying the country did not want its participation to be viewed as opposition to the King.
Writing on X, he said Uganda would not take part in anything it believed did not have Charles’ approval.
The announcement came days after the Royal Household issued formal guidance reiterating Harry and Meghan’s status following their return to the UK.
Harry’s Team Points to Palace Letter
Reporting from outside Buckingham Palace, Good Morning Britain royal correspondent Jonathan Swain said the King appeared to be setting out clear boundaries now that Harry and Meghan were living in Britain again.
The guidance, issued by the Lord Chamberlain, stressed that the Sussexes are non-working royals and that Harry’s charitable activities are undertaken in a private capacity.
Swain said Harry and Meghan had reportedly hoped they might instead be described as “public figures”.
Attention then turned to whether the guidance had created confusion around Harry’s Invictus Games work.
A source close to the Duke told ITV that Uganda’s withdrawal was “clearly a consequence” of the Lord Chamberlain’s guidance, whether that outcome had been intended or not.
The source also claimed the document had been issued without consultation with the Sussexes and argued that Invictus competitors would ultimately be the people affected.
Swain suggested the dispute highlighted how sharply divided the two sides remain despite Harry and Meghan now being back on British soil.
“They may be here living in the UK, but it seems the distance between Harry and the rest of his family is perhaps greater than ever,” he said.
GMB Viewers Quickly Lose Patience
The royal discussion immediately prompted responses from viewers on X, with some frustrated that the latest disagreement had once again become a major talking point on the morning programme.
One viewer accused Harry of blaming the Palace for his own problems and criticised the ongoing narrative surrounding his relationship with his family.
Another reacted strongly to the latest dispute and suggested relations between Harry and the Royal Family had deteriorated beyond repair.
Others were simply tired of hearing about the feud.
One viewer questioned why so much attention continued to be devoted to the dispute when there were more important issues happening elsewhere.
The reaction came amid an already tense period for the Sussexes following their return to Britain.
The Palace’s recent letter was intended to provide clarity over their position after they stepped away from senior royal duties in 2020. It reaffirmed that they do not represent the sovereign and continue to operate outside the working Royal Family.
Harry’s association with the Invictus Games, however, has now complicated that message after Uganda explicitly referenced King Charles while announcing its withdrawal.
For the Duke, the latest development means an organisation closely associated with his public work has become caught up in his continuing disagreements with the Royal Household.
And for Good Morning Britain viewers, Thursday’s programme showed just how quickly the Sussexes’ return to the UK has reignited a royal debate many had already heard plenty about.
