Sky News came to a halt for a devastating update on the wildfires that are ripping through Bordeaux, France. The programme aired the breaking alert that areas around the city in France are being evacuated due to wildfires, with more than 200,000 people already forced to flee their homes in France and Spain. Sky correspondent Sadiya Chowdhury reported live from Lège-Cap-Ferret in France, one of the areas worst affected by the blaze.
“You can see around me just how bad it is. We believe this is where the fire started. Still some flames burning. We understand the fire is moving towards Bordeaux,” she said. “All around here just burnt, charred remains of what was once perhaps a luscious forest area.” As the camera panned around, it revealed just how close residential buildings were to where the fire had started.

“We’ve seen towns completely deserted. Businesses are closed, homes look completely shut off. A real sense that people left in quite a hurry. There’s a really eerie sense of quietness except from the emergency vehicles that are once in a while going around here,” Sadiya remarked.
She continued: “These fires, some of them raging since Wednesday, all because of this heatwave which shows no signs of letting up.”
Sadiya explained that you did not need to be near the fire itself to smell the smoke, revealing that the plane she travelled on was filled with the “smell of thick smoke” when she arrived.

She praised the efforts of the fire services and other organisations working to bring the fires under control, adding that there has thankfully been no fatalities so far.
The scale of the devastation was then revealed on screen, with Sadiya standing in front of a house destroyed by the blaze.
“This house is completely destroyed. The garage doors, the doors, the windows, the roof, everything blown out,” she said. “In the distance, all of those trees have been burnt completely.”
Turning towards another row of houses, Sadiya added: “A vehicle has been burnt completely. The house is destroyed. The property, the garden, the fence, all very much charred.”
Despite the devastation, Sadiya revealed that one neighbouring property has somehow managed to remain intact.
“The house is perhaps how the owners left it. They are among the 110,000 people that fled this area. They are dotted around evacuation centres across this region,” Sadiya told viewers.
“The weather is making this much worse. That fire is still very much raging and it is heading in the direction of Bordeaux, a town which is usually, at this time of year, full of tourists. It is a very popular summer holiday destination but now, there is no sign of that.”
