Sky News was interrupted for a breaking update on the tragic incident near Middlesbrough in the early hours of Saturday morning (August 22). Seven people, including two Pol!ce officers, were k!lled in a car crash involving a Pol!ce vehicle and a Volkswagen Passat on the A66. The news channel ground to a halt for the latest development, announcing that nine men and three women have been arrested following the fatal crash.

News correspondent, Shingi Mararike, who reported live from the scene, began: “We’ve just had a significant update now from Cleveland Pol!ce around the fact that there was another vehicle that was also involved in the incident over the weekend, as well as the other arrests made, so let me walk you through some of that detail.

“Cleveland Pol!ce are telling us that they’ve launched a wide-scale investigation into the criminality which took place prior to the fatal crash. They spoke about how in that incident, there was a first vehicle because they had received several reports of two vehicles being driven dangerously.

“The first vehicle is believed to be a Volvo X60, which was witnessed ramming properties in the Middlesbrough area. Both vehicles were operating without number plates, which referred to the Volkswagen Passat we know was involved in the accident. But they say these were picked up by the force’s automated number plate recognition technology, which then triggered the pursuit.

“We know that the Volvo X60 has been traced and recovered in Middlesbrough as part of a wider policing investigation. They also state that nine men and three women aged between 19 and 61 have been arrested on suspicion of several offences, ranging from possession of a firearm to participating in the activities of an organised crime group.”

The collision occurred minutes after the Passat was captured on a doorbell camera speeding through the streets of Middlesbrough. Pol!ce had been pursuing the vehicle after it was described as suspicious, with two Pol!ce cars following it through the streets.

Three minutes later, the car ploughed into the other marked armed-response vehicles, killing all seven people in the two cars. The Pol!ce watchdog, the IOPC, says the crash happened about 10 seconds after the Pol!ce pursuit ended.

It comes after the force named the five occupants of the Volkswagen Passat involved in the incident as Michael Robert Cahill, 23, Theo Rae, 17, Cole Robert Worthy, 17, Jakub Matusiak, 23, and Makai Saddington, 18, who d!ed in the crash.
