In a catastrophic tragedy of staggering proportions, an entire film crew died alongside dozens of others after a near-total glacier collapse triggered an avalanche, unleashing a devastating torrent of mud, ice, and rock on an almost incomprehensible scale.
A whole mountain village was completely buried beneath a crushing layer of ice and mud nearly 200 feet deep, along with the unfortunate film crew. Among those lost was one of the nation’s finest actor-directors, already hailed as a ‘superstar’ within his tragically brief 30 years on earth.
The catastrophic event in question was the Kolka–Karmadon rock ice slide, the film being shot at the time was The Messenger, and the iconic talent lost to the world was Russian actor Sergei Bodrov Jr.
The horrific 2002 natural disaster claimed the lives of at least 125 people, with some estimates putting the total number of dead and missing at around 150 – including virtually the entire cast and crew who had ventured to the ill-fated mountain filming location, reports the Daily Star.

On September 20, 2002, following a near-total collapse of the Kolka Glacier, an avalanche was set in motion, resulting in a rock-ice slide on the northern slope of the Mount Kazbek massif in North Ossetia–Alania.
The 500ft collapsed Kolka Glacier reportedly slid down the Karmadon Gorge in the North Caucasus for at least 15 miles at estimated speeds of more than 60mph, with one unfortunate village bearing the brunt of nature’s devastating wrath that day.
The principal village of Nizhniy Karmadon was entirely engulfed and destroyed beneath the vast debris mass of the glacier collapse and rock-ice slide. Neighbouring settlements, however, did not escape without significant damage.
The mountain village of Gornaya Saniba suffered severe flooding and destruction, as rivers became blocked and temporary lakes began forming behind the ice dam. Reports indicated that some 20 million tons of ice broke away from the glacier on that fateful day, thundering down the Russian mountainside.
The glacier collapse and ensuing avalanche and rock-ice slide claimed the lives of over 120 people, amongst them Sergei Jr’s film crew of 27 people (though certain reports suggest that figure may have been closer to 47).

Entire film crew dead including top star
Acclaimed Russian actor-director Sergei Bodrov Jr was amongst those who died in the catastrophic natural disaster. Sergei Jr had been in the Caucasus Mountains filming his project, provisionally titled The Messenger, when the tragedy struck.
The Russian superstar had been at the helm of the production, a film that would ultimately never be completed owing to the devastating catastrophe. Sergei Jr and his team, largely young actors from Vladikavkas and Moscow, were reportedly awaiting their transport in the village when the catastrophic glacier descended.
The group had travelled to Vladikavkaz to begin production, and following the conclusion of that day’s filming, the natural catastrophe struck. Comprehensive search and rescue operations were launched to locate victims of the environmental tragedy, but numerous lives were claimed.
Officials initially estimated that 49 individuals from the production team or local support personnel had vanished in the calamity, while nine had been brought to safety – seven who had been elsewhere at the time, and two fortunate survivors who escaped the disaster zone.
Scientists reportedly forecast that the collapsed glacier would require at least 12 years to melt.

A star extinguished
Sergei Jr represented a symbol of promise for Russian youth, and had been celebrated as an ‘icon’ for the first generation of young Russians maturing in the aftermath of the Soviet Union’s collapse.
While Sergei was already a household name in Russia due to his accomplished television presenting career and distinguished film credentials, he first captured international attention after appearing in the Oscar-nominated film Prisoner of the Caucasus. Notably, Prisoner of the Caucasus was helmed by Sergei Jr’s father, Sergei Bodrov Senior.
He portrayed a hapless inexperienced soldier who was captured in Chechnya in the 1996 film, which was adapted from a Leo Tolstoy novella. The critically acclaimed production even secured the International Critics Prize and the Audience Award at the Cannes Film Festival.
The young actor had emerged as something of an icon amongst Russia’s youth, capturing the affections of the nation’s post-communist generation through his performance as a charming yet lethal hit-man in the enormously successful gangster films Brother and Brother 2.

In what many regarded as a tragic irony, the Caucasus region where Sergei Jr perished was the setting of his role in the Academy Award-nominated picture.
A year before his death, he returned once more to those same mountains to film a supporting part in Alexei Balabanov’s War, and ultimately, it was those very peaks which had propelled him to global fame that sealed his fate.
Sergei Jr had captured the hearts of millions across his homeland before his premature death, and the young star was viewed by many as a beacon of hope for post-Soviet Russia’s struggling film industry.
Sergei Jr was survived by his wife Svetlana – whom he met while working on his popular television documentary series Look – and their two children. His daughter was merely four years old when he died, while his newborn son was just one month old.
