Prince George celebrated his 13th birthday earlier this week, with Kensington Palace releasing both a new photograph of the prince and a video to mark his special day. While the photograph showed George looking very smart following Trooping the Colour celebrations earlier this year, the video shared shows what the young royal is really like.

Taken on a family holiday earlier this year, the video shows George petting the family dogs, playing cricket, having fun at the beach, enjoying a boat trip, and even climbing some rocks with his younger brother, Prince Louis. Barefoot and in casual clothes, the video shows what the second-in-line to the throne is really like away from royal life. It also shows Prince William and Princess Catherine are giving their eldest son a childhood that will help him become a “strong” adult, according to Global Family Expert and Childcare Specialist Jo Frost.

Speaking exclusively to The Daily Express, the Supernanny star said: “Happy 13th Birthday Prince George!

“You know, as a family expert, I’ve always believed that what children need most isn’t a perfect childhood but indeed a connected one with loving, emotionally available parents, healthy boundaries, time outdoors, opportunities to explore and the freedom to simply be children, all of which help shape emotionally healthy adults. Protecting childhood matters deeply.”

Prince William cautions that Kate Middleton has 'a long way to go' after announcing she's 'cancer free'

Talking about the freedom William and Catherine are allowing him to have, Frost continued: “Prince George may one day become King, for now he’s a 13-year-old boy. That’s exactly as it should be.

“Childhood isn’t a rehearsal for life; it’s a vital stage of life in itself. The stronger and happier those foundations are, the stronger the adult he will become, whatever responsibilities his future may hold.”

People online have also praised William and Catherine for allowing their royal children to have as ordinary a childhood as possible.

One admirer wrote on X: “Can I just say well done to the Prince and Princess of Wales for giving their children as much of a normal life as they can. They are showing even with titles, the kids still are living their best life, enjoying activities as a family.”

A fan said: “William and Catherine changed the way royal kids are raised! Their kids are all high profile, known all over the world, but they still live a private lifelike any other kid! They are truly wonderful parents.”

Another commented online: “Kids being raised in a healthy, loving home. Shows that they are surrounded by family that loves and wants them to flourish, as well as enjoy being kids. Great job by their parents.”
