“bewilderment”! Prince Harry and Meghan Markle ‘pulling their hair out’ over William and Kate appearance
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may have been less than impressed by Prince William and Princess Kate’s latest high-profile appearance, according to royal biographer Tom Bower.
The Prince and Princess of Wales stepped out in London on Tuesday for the premiere of Tom Cruise’s new film Digger, putting on a polished display in Leicester Square.
Their appearance quickly became a talking point on GB News, where presenters Alex Armstrong and Ellie Costello discussed the couple alongside Bower.
The royal author then offered his own interpretation of how the Sussexes might have reacted, suggesting Harry and Meghan could be watching William and Kate’s public success with “envy and anger”.
There is no evidence in the report that Harry or Meghan themselves have expressed those feelings, meaning Bower’s remarks remain speculation.
William and Kate Make Glamorous Red Carpet Appearance
Kate wore a full-length purple gown by Jenny Packham for the premiere.
She paired the dress with pearl drop earrings previously worn by Princess Diana and an amethyst sautoir necklace associated with the late Queen Mother.
William opted for a black velvet jacket and bow tie as the couple joined Cruise on the red carpet.
The Hollywood star has known members of the Royal Family for years and previously met Diana before later attending her funeral in 1997.
Their appearance came amid renewed attention on the monarchy following the publication of Earl Spencer’s book Swan Song: Diana, My Sister.
The memoir includes claims about King Charles’s reaction following Diana’s death, including the allegation that he appeared “giddy”.
Buckingham Palace has firmly rejected that portrayal.
Tom Bower Makes Striking Sussex Claim
During the GB News discussion, Ellie Costello described William and Kate’s appearance as an example of the couple simply getting on with their duties.
“We had this fantastic example, we should say, of the Prince and Princess of Wales, keep calm and carry on last night,” she said.
Bower responded enthusiastically.
“It was marvelous,” he said.
He then speculated about the Sussexes’ reaction, adding: “One can imagine in the Cotswolds this morning, the Sussexes are pulling their hair out with envy and anger.”
The remark was Bower’s personal interpretation rather than a reported reaction from Harry or Meghan.
He went on to argue that more appearances from William and Kate could help draw attention away from continuing criticism surrounding the Royal Family.
“Of course, it’s business as usual,” he said.
“And hopefully the Wales will appear a lot more to snap the oxygen out of the Sussexes’ campaign against the Royal Family.”
Again, that description of a Sussex “campaign” was Bower’s characterisation.
Harry Faces Separate Technical Problem in New York
The comments came shortly after Harry experienced an unexpected disruption during a speech in New York City.
The Duke of Sussex had been addressing the risks young people face from social media and artificial intelligence when his remarks suddenly stopped.
Around seven minutes into the speech, Harry paused after saying: “The damage was already done to a generation of children and parents. We do not have years for what comes next.”
After a prolonged pause, he said: “And that’s it,” before leaving the stage.
A spokesperson for Harry later confirmed that a teleprompter malfunction had caused the interruption.
Approximately 40 minutes later, following other presentations, Harry returned to the stage and completed his speech.
Royal Spotlight Remains Firmly on Both Couples
William and Kate’s latest public appearance therefore arrived during another busy week of royal headlines involving both sides of the family.
The Waleses attracted attention for their red carpet appearance with Cruise, while Harry was making his own public appearance in the United States.
Bower interpreted the contrast as potentially frustrating for the Sussexes, but there is no confirmation from Harry or Meghan that they viewed William and Kate’s appearance in that way.
What is clear is that both couples continue to attract intense public attention whenever they step into the spotlight.
And with William and Kate receiving praise for their latest appearance, Bower believes the Prince and Princess of Wales may be particularly effective at shifting the royal conversation simply by continuing with their public duties.
