King Charles statement sparks furious reaction from Harry and Meghan camp as Sussexes receive brutal royal status blow
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s camp has reportedly hit back after King Charles took the extraordinary step of publicly clarifying the couple’s royal status following their return to Britain.
In a move designed to “avoid doubt or confusion”, the King instructed the Lord Chamberlain to issue guidance confirming that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex remain non-working members of the Royal Family.
The statement made clear that there had been “no change” to their current status, with their His and Her Royal Highness styles remaining in abeyance and not to be used.
It also stated that their charitable activities are undertaken in a private capacity and that their position is “akin to private citizens with commercial and charitable interests”.
But the message appears to have triggered a strong reaction from people close to the Sussexes.
A friend of Harry and Meghan reportedly dismissed the idea that the Prince could ever truly be treated as an ordinary private citizen.
“Some people will say, ‘But they’re private citizens.’ Nonsense. Utter nonsense,” the friend claimed, according to reports.
“They are two of the most high-profile people in the world.”
The source went on to argue that Harry’s position within the Royal Family could never simply disappear because he had stepped away from official duties.
“The idea that Harry, who is the King’s son and brother to the future King, could ever live an entirely private life is for the birds,” the friend reportedly added.
The extraordinary intervention comes just weeks after Harry and Meghan returned to Britain with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, after several years living in the United States.
Their arrival immediately reignited questions about whether their return could eventually lead to a new role within the monarchy.
But the King’s latest message appears designed to draw a firm line between the Sussexes’ presence in Britain and any suggestion that they are returning as working royals.
The distinction is particularly significant because Harry and Meghan have continued to undertake charitable and public-facing activities despite no longer representing the Sovereign.
Under the Palace guidance, however, those activities remain personal and do not constitute official royal duties.
The timing has inevitably fuelled speculation about tensions within the Royal Family.
Reports have suggested that Prince William has been particularly keen for the Sussexes’ position to remain clearly defined following their return.
For Charles, however, the situation is complicated by his desire to maintain a relationship with his youngest son and his grandchildren.
The King can welcome Harry and Meghan being closer to Britain while simultaneously making clear that their constitutional position has not changed.
That appears to be precisely what the Palace has now done.
The letter was sent not only to Harry’s team but also to senior government and military officials and Lord Lieutenants around Britain, making sure there can be no uncertainty about how the Sussexes should be treated in an official capacity.
For Harry and Meghan, the message could hardly be clearer.
Their return to Britain does not represent a return to royal duty.
They remain the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, but their former working roles remain firmly in the past.
And while a person close to the couple may insist that Harry can never be entirely private because of who he is, the Palace has now drawn the distinction in unusually explicit terms.
The Sussexes may once again be living on British soil.
But according to King Charles’ latest intervention, they have not returned to the Firm.
