Meghan Markle will not be joining Prince Harry in London this week, that’s what we were told over the weekend. The family had decided that it wasn’t safe for the Duchess and their two young children to visit the English capital with the Duke, after they discovered there would be no armed security (despite this being the case since they quit as working royals six years ago).
But a key part of the statement suggests that Meghan will, in fact, be joining her husband this week, as it only referred to the London elements. No final decision has been made on whether the trio will join Harry in Birmingham later in the week, after she pulled out of her scheduled engagements in the capital.
The jam-making duchess had been due to carry out her first engagement in London in over six years, joining her husband at a London hospital.
Security arrangements are still being looked into, but if Meghan were to attend any event, it would be to mark the lead-up to the 2027 Birmingham Invictus Games.
The focal point of their short UK trip is the one-year countdown to the Games. While other engagements have been organised with the other UK charities he supports, the visit is primarily about the Invictus celebrations.
If she were to travel over for the event, with Prince Archie, seven, and Princess Lilibet, four, it would also help Harry’s case for a reunion with his father.
As the King has not seen the Sussex grandchildren since Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations in June 2022.
He is keen to see the youngsters but after the chaos of the last few days, which saw conflicting messages released over the offer of a stay at Buckingham Palace, a reunion is looking highly unlikely if the children aren’t there to act as a buffer.
The King also has an incredibly busy schedule this week, dampening hopes of a meeting between father and son.
Harry last met his father in September, when the pair spent less than 45 minutes together for a cup of tea and a chat at Clarence House.
But while the Duke is desperate to patch things up with his father, who continues to be treated for cancer, there is growing distrust and unease about any meeting due to Team Sussex’s volatile nature.
If the trip had been conducted quietly, privately and without fanfare, a meeting would have almost certainly been on the cards.
But with the increased press attention due to the chaotic briefings, whether it be on security, the offer of royal accommodation or who is coming, the King quite rightly has no interest in being dragged into the latest Sussex soap opera.
