Claims that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle returned to Britain to revive the duchess’s acting career have been firmly rejected by television industry insiders.

Meghan had reportedly entered early discussions about a possible role in the third series of Guy Ritchie’s Netflix drama The Gentlemen.

The talks appeared to coincide with the Sussexes’ unexpected return to the UK, leading to speculation that a move back into acting could have influenced the family’s decision to leave California.

However, industry sources have now insisted there is “no chance” Harry and Meghan would uproot their children for a brief television appearance.

“You don’t uproot your family for one role in a show,” one insider told Sky News. “There’s no chance the reason they’re coming back is TV roles like The Gentlemen.”

Meghan linked to two-episode role

Meghan stepped away from acting after becoming engaged to Prince Harry. Before joining the Royal Family, she was best known for playing paralegal Rachel Zane in the American legal drama Suits.

Recent reports suggested that she was considering a return to scripted television and had been discussed for a role in two episodes of The Gentlemen.

Deadline previously reported that talks were at an early stage. No deal or official casting announcement was made by Meghan, Netflix or the programme’s producers.

One source has now claimed that the idea was dropped after those involved became concerned by the publicity surrounding Meghan’s possible appearance.

“I think the producers have said, ‘There’s a part for two episodes, let’s look into that’, but then decided, ‘Reverse, reverse, the publicity is terrible’,” the insider said.

“I doubt the producers or Netflix are enjoying this kind of attention.”

That account has not been officially confirmed, and it remains unclear how far any discussions about the role progressed.

Insiders reject acting theory

The possibility of Meghan returning to television became one of several theories surrounding the Sussexes’ sudden move back to Britain.

However, sources argued that a short appearance would not provide a convincing explanation for relocating an entire family across the Atlantic.

One insider also offered a cutting assessment of the couple’s return after six years trying to establish an independent life in the United States.

“After years trying to make it in America as non-working members of the Royal Family, it is bound to be a little bit humbling for them to come skulking back, even though they will pretend it isn’t,” the source claimed.

The remark reflects the insider’s personal assessment rather than an explanation provided by Harry or Meghan.

Sussexes begin extended stay

Harry and Meghan arrived in Britain earlier this week with Prince Archie, Princess Lilibet and their two dogs, Pula and Mia.

The family is expected to remain in the country for an “extended stay”, although reports have offered widely differing estimates ranging from several months to several years.

The Sussexes have not publicly disclosed the principal reason for their return or confirmed exactly where they intend to live.

Their arrival has nevertheless placed them back at the centre of royal attention, with questions surrounding their security, their children’s education and their relationship with King Charles and Prince William.

A royal commentator has also accused the couple of having a “god complex” while questioning how their California-based commercial ventures would operate from Britain.

Meghan’s lifestyle brand, As Ever, has its core production in California, while her reported acting discussions remain unconfirmed.

For now, industry insiders appear convinced that a possible role in The Gentlemen was not significant enough to trigger the Sussexes’ transatlantic move.

Whether Meghan still intends to pursue an acting comeback from Britain remains unknown, but the reported Netflix opportunity now appears far less certain than first suggested.
