Rowley said the royals had already endured an extremely difficult period, referring to Harry and Meghan stepping down as working royals as well as the health challenges faced by King Charles and Princess Catherine.
“They’ve gone through an awful lot in a very short space of time,” he said.
He then questioned how much confidence readers could place in other parts of Spencer’s memoir after one allegation had been shown to be incorrect.
“To then have these revelations piled on, knowing that the 30th anniversary and commemoration of Diana’s death will be next year,” Rowley said.
“Then all of a sudden to have this book that even Piers Morgan has been able to dissect in record quick time, to make out that actually the most obvious of claims can be discredited, it makes you wonder what else can be discredited in the book.”
Rowley then offered his interpretation of how the King might view the situation.
“Piers Morgan is taking up the mantle for the Royal Family at the minute,” he said.
“I think the King is probably secretly pleased that people will see that there are errors in this book, and it’s not just the ones that are disputed between Earl Spencer and the King.”
