King Charles has issued one of the most emotional public messages of his reign after witnessing the devastating impact of wildfires across parts of the UK and Europe.
The monarch shared a personal open letter alongside a series of striking images showing the destruction left behind by the fires, including scorched landscapes, blackened ground and damaged woodland.
Opening his message, Charles admitted that he and Queen Camilla had been deeply affected by the scale of the devastation.
“My wife and I have been appalled by the devastating impact of wildfires this summer and the terrible destruction they have caused to homes, livelihoods and landscapes,” he wrote.
The King referred specifically to damage in the Cairngorms, while also acknowledging communities elsewhere across the United Kingdom and Europe that have faced similar destruction.

Charles Pays Tribute to Emergency Crews
A significant part of the King’s message was dedicated to the people who have worked in dangerous conditions to bring the fires under control.
Charles praised firefighters, emergency responders and others involved in supporting affected communities.
“I can only express my admiration and appreciation to all those who have worked so tirelessly and courageously, in the U.K. and beyond, to bring these fires under control,” he said.
He also recognised those continuing to help families and communities facing what he described as a long process of “restoration and renewal”.
The images accompanying his letter underlined the scale of that challenge.
Burned vegetation and darkened earth could be seen in areas once covered by healthy landscapes, offering a stark reminder of what had been lost.
King Shares Personal Concern Over Climate Change
Charles then turned to the wider environmental implications of the fires.
The monarch, who has spoken about environmental issues for decades, said witnessing similar disasters around the world had left a deep impression on him.
“The shock of witnessing these fires around the world in recent months reminds us forcibly of the mounting pressures that prolonged heat and drought are placing upon our precious Earth,” he wrote.
He warned that communities needed to become more resilient through stronger preparation and risk reduction.
But the King also argued that dealing with the consequences alone would not be enough.
He stressed the need to address what he described as the “root causes of climate change”, warning that failure to do so could create conditions in which destructive events become increasingly common.
The comments made the message both a tribute to those dealing with the current emergency and another public appeal from Charles over the environmental issues that have long been central to his work.

Despite the destruction shown in the photographs, the King ended his letter with a message of hope.

He added: “It is my most heartfelt hope that they continue to find in one another the strength to rebuild.”

The message was signed simply “Charles R.”, giving the statement an especially personal tone.
Rather than focusing only on statistics or the physical destruction, the King’s words centred on the people whose homes, livelihoods and surroundings have been affected.
