Kate Humble’s romance with BBC co-star husband – and why she never wants kids

Springwatch star Kate Humble enjoys a peaceful life in the countryside with her husband of 34 years, TV producer and director Ludo Graham. The couple, who married in Berkshire in 1992, had first crossed paths when Kate was 16.
“My step-grandfather and his great uncle were in the same tank regiment, and they stayed in touch after the war,” the presenter told Prima. “My grandfather organised a big bash to celebrate his 70th birthday and I met Ludo there. I was 16, he was 24. I remember thinking how handsome he was, but he completely ignored me.

“About four years later, when I’d been travelling and liked the idea of working in TV, my mum suggested I call him. He couldn’t offer me a job but he turned out to be a very good kisser! I never wanted marriage or to have children, but when he asked me to marry him, I simply couldn’t imagine life without him. We married when I was 23.”

A decision which Kate has reflected on in several interviews, the BBC favourite has stated that she simply didn’t want to have children, though she enjoys being an auntie and godmother. “I’ve never wanted them. I know it sounds dreadful, but that’s just how I feel,” Kate explained while chatting with Gaby Roslin on ITV’s Lorraine.
In a separate interview with The Guardian, Kate explained that she and Ludo had “agreed from the start” that they wouldn’t have kids. “I suspect Mum would have loved it if I’d given her grandchildren and was sad and disappointed initially, but they were incredibly happy that I’d found such a wonderful husband, with whom they’d set me up,” she noted. “It was always expected that after a couple of years, we’d move out of the city to have kids, but that was never my plan.”

Instead, Kate and Ludo have curated an idyllic life with their beloved pets in the Welsh countryside. The pair, who previously lived in London, moved to the Wye Valley in 2007, where they established Humble By Nature, a 117-acre working farm that offers courses in animal husbandry, cooking, and crafting.
