Prince William and Prince Harry may remain deeply divided personally, but a royal author believes they are likely to share one concern when it comes to their mother Princess Diana’s legacy.
The brothers have spent years at odds, yet royal writer Katie Nicholl has suggested Earl Spencer’s new book could be something both would find difficult for the same reason: it brings painful arguments surrounding Diana back into the spotlight almost 30 years after her death.
Diana’s brother, Charles Spencer, has attracted widespread attention with Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, which contains a series of allegations concerning King Charles and events surrounding Diana’s death.
Among the most controversial claims, Spencer alleges that Charles reacted as though he had “won a lottery” after hearing that Diana had died.
Buckingham Palace has already issued a response challenging the reliability of Spencer’s recollections.
William and Harry Said to Want Diana’s Legacy Protected
Speaking to Hello! Magazine, Nicholl reflected on how William and Harry might be feeling about the renewed controversy.
She made clear that their private reactions are not known.
“It’s hard to know how they’re feeling,” she said.
However, Nicholl argued that both brothers have spent years trying to preserve Diana’s memory through their own public and charitable work.
She suggested that having old disputes, rifts and family tensions pulled back into public debate could be painful for both men.
“Ultimately, [Earl Spencer’s book bombshell is happening…] at a moment in time nearly 30 years on, when they want their mother’s memory laid to rest, they want her legacy honoured, and continued in their charity work,” she said.
Nicholl added: “To have it overshadowed with arguments, fallouts, rifts… that are now resurfacing three decades on, can surely not be what any of them want.”
Her comments represent an assessment of the brothers’ likely feelings rather than a joint statement from William and Harry themselves.
Earl Spencer’s Claims Reopen Old Wounds
Spencer’s book has brought renewed scrutiny to some of the most sensitive moments in modern royal history.
His claims about Charles’s reaction to Diana’s death have already created significant controversy and prompted Buckingham Palace to respond.
