‘Panicking’! Strictly Host Falters Live On Air As Furious BBC Viewers Hit Out
Strictly Come Dancing returned with a major presenting shake-up as Emma Willis, Josh Widdicombe and Johannes Radebe made their debut as the programme’s new hosting trio.
The three presenters fronted the 2026 launch show on September 19, introducing the new celebrity line-up as contestants discovered which professional dancers they would be partnered with.
But as viewers got their first proper look at the new presenting team, body language expert Inbaal Honigman offered her interpretation of how each host appeared to be handling the pressure.
Speaking on behalf of Covers.com, Honigman claimed Emma looked like the most confident member of the trio and appeared to be taking on the majority of the presenting responsibility.
“Emma is carrying the presenter duties almost single-handedly, and they all know it,” she said.
Her comments are an interpretation of the presenters’ body language rather than confirmed insight into what any of them were actually thinking or feeling.
Expert Claims Josh Appeared Under Pressure
Honigman suggested Josh looked less comfortable during the debut broadcast.
She claimed his positioning alongside Emma indicated that he was relying on her as he adjusted to his new role.
“When the three stand together, Josh leans towards Emma, showing that he is depending on her,” she said.
She also suggested his focus on the autocue gave the impression he was concentrating intensely on getting through the script.
Honigman described his smile as appearing serious rather than relaxed, claiming that although he smiled with his mouth, the expression did not fully reach his eyes.
She interpreted this as a sign that Josh was treating the presenting job very seriously.
Again, these observations reflect Honigman’s interpretation of his on-screen behaviour and do not establish Josh’s private emotions.
Johannes Appeared More Relaxed
According to Honigman, Johannes presented a very different picture.
She said the former professional dancer looked like he was “having the time of his life” as he embraced his new role.
Honigman pointed to his posture, saying he stood tall with his shoulders back and appeared enthusiastic.
“His dancer’s posture conveys his utter delight at scoring such an incredible job,” she said.
She suggested Johannes appeared less concerned about whether everything went perfectly and more focused on enjoying the experience.
That confidence, in her view, created a clear contrast with Josh’s more concentrated delivery.
Emma Described as the Leader
Honigman was most emphatic about Emma’s role within the trio.
“Emma is in charge,” she said.
The expert suggested Emma’s long presenting experience helped her appear composed despite the scale of the new role.
“She stands strong, shoulders square with confidence and head held high,” Honigman said.
“She knows her way around a presenting job, so even though this is new, it’s not too scary.”
Her analysis suggested Emma appeared comfortable taking the lead while Josh and Johannes settled into the programme around her.
Viewers Split Over Josh’s Debut
The new presenting line-up also generated plenty of discussion on social media.
Some viewers praised Emma while questioning whether the programme needed three hosts.
One person wrote: “Emma….brilliant a natural. JoJo….so so (don’t need 3 hosts). Josh…bloody awful – get rid of him.”
Another said they liked Josh but felt his comedy background made him an unusual choice for the programme.
“I love Josh but I feel he would be more entertaining as a contestant,” they wrote.
They added that three presenters made the format feel “awkward”.
A third viewer praised Emma and described Johannes as “fine” but said Josh appeared like “a spare part”.
Not everyone agreed with the criticism, however.
One viewer wrote: “Josh Widdecombe has me screaming,” accompanied by laughing emojis.
New Era Begins for Strictly
The launch show represented a significant change for Strictly Come Dancing, with Emma, Josh and Johannes taking over one of the BBC’s most high-profile entertainment programmes.
Their debut was always likely to attract close scrutiny as viewers adjusted to a completely different presenting dynamic.
Emma’s experience, Johannes’s background within the programme and Josh’s comedy style give the trio very different strengths.
Early reaction suggests audiences are still deciding how well those personalities work together.
