Nick Knowles has issued an update on the future of DIY SOS, after revealing his need to “disappear” from television. The presenter, 63, who has fronted the beloved BBC series since 1999, recently explained that he would be taking a break from his TV work to help care for his wife, Katie Dadzie, who has been told she will need to undergo another major operation. Katie, 36, was rushed to hospital in October last year with a ruptured cervix, which occurred 12 weeks after she underwent a hysterectomy.

Nick has now confirmed that Katie has got another surgery coming up. Although he will remain at home to care for her, he revealed filming for the next series of DIY SOS will begin “fairly soon”. Speaking to the Daily Express at the TRIC Awards, he said: “We shot 12 programmes last year, so six went out in the autumn and there’s six coming up this autumn.

“We start again, I presume, fairly soon. In the meantime, I’ve got a bit of space because we did so many in such a short time.

“I’ve got space to do other things. It’s not a break but a bigger space than I normally get.”

Despite the overwhelming success of DIY SOS, Nick admitted he wasn’t convinced it would take off at first.

He confessed: “We got to the end of the first series of six and thought that would be it. How many jokes can you make about building is what we thought. Amazingly it’s carrying on.”

Emotions often run high during filming, as the show follows families facing major life challenges whose lives are transformed when their homes are rebuilt.

Nick has often been moved to tears, admitting there are countless emotional moments that stand out to him.

He shared: “There’s hundreds of moments that stand out for being emotional. How do you pick? Putting a garden on the top of Great Ormond Street for kids that are up there, building a street for homeless veterans or building at Grenfell after the fire.

“How do you pick between them? They’re all just incredible.”

The I’m A Celebrity star added: “We’ve been lucky enough to work with amazing people and for amazing people over the years and I think the programme, at the moment, when you see everybody come together to do something who couldn’t get out of a situation any other way, is a really lovely message to put out there: If we all work together, we can do better stuff.”
