Who Wants to Be a Millionaire star Tim Janus has died at the age of 49 following a long battle with cancer.
Janus died on Wednesday, September 16, with his cause of death reported as complications linked to his illness. The reality television star was known for appearing on several popular shows, including Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, where he won $100,000.
He also made history as the biggest winner in Cash Cab and later appeared as a contestant on The Amazing Race in 2018.
Away from television, Janus became widely recognised by his competitive eating nickname, Eater X. He spent 12 years competing professionally between 2006 and 2018 and rose as high as No. 2 in the world.
His most recognisable feature was a hand-painted Viking mask that he wore during competitions, helping turn him into one of the sport’s most distinctive personalities.
Janus’s death was confirmed by his publicist in an obituary published on the Major League Eating website on Sunday, September 20.
In the tribute, Crazy Legs Conti, Janus’s former roommate and a former world oyster-eating champion, remembered him as someone who followed his own interests rather than conforming to expectations.
The obituary also explained the story behind Janus’s trademark Viking appearance. His painted mask was inspired by his childhood passion for professional wrestling and became part of the theatrical persona he brought to competitive eating events.
The tribute described how Janus would transform into a mysterious masked competitor at contests, adding an element of performance to a sport where personality and spectacle had become increasingly important.
Away from competitions, however, Janus was remembered as a much more complex individual. Friends described him as intelligent, restless and funny, with a strong curiosity about the world around him.
His interests were sometimes unconventional, but the obituary said his enthusiasm was genuine and that he showed little concern about whether the subjects that fascinated him were considered unusual.
Janus was inducted into the Major League Eating Hall of Fame in 2016. Reflecting on his career at the time, he said he had learned valuable lessons about life through competitive eating, particularly the importance of caring deeply about something and working hard at it.
His ambitions extended well beyond television and competitive eating. After being diagnosed with cancer, Janus had been preparing for a new chapter after being accepted into the United States Foreign Service.
He received an assignment and had plans to serve overseas, but his illness ultimately disrupted those ambitions.
Following news of his death, tributes poured in from fans who remembered Janus for his distinctive personality and achievements.
One admirer expressed sadness over his passing and wished that his memory would live on, while another remembered him as one of their favourite competitors in the Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest.
Another tribute described Janus as a talented competitive eater and world burping champion, while praising his intelligence, humour and warmth.
A further fan reflected on meeting Janus and said that despite knowing him for only a short time, he had made a lasting impression.
