Princess Catherine’s public role is said to have been expertly orchestrated to be different from that of the late Princess Diana. According to royal expert Richard Kay, the future Queen of England “is not Diana, she doesn’t want to be that sort of star, and I think on one level she’s highly flattered by” the comparisons. Richard made an appearance on Channel 5 documentary, Kate: Our New Diana, which compared and contrasted the lives and public roles of the two royals.

Unlike her mother-in-law, the programme discussed how Catherine “never sought the limelight, she fell in love with a Prince and therefore took on the role.” She enjoyed a multi-year relationship with Prince William before their marriage, which helped her gradually adapt to public scrutiny, whereas Princess Diana and King Charles were engaged after six months of dating.

Richard stated: “Diana was an international star and still is. On the front page of magazines, she still sells magazines.”

As royal correspondent, Simon Vigar added: “Diana was a remarkable member of the Royal Family, there’s never been anyone quite like her, no one has replaced her in the fame gallery.”

He continued: “Kate has acknowledged herself what a force for change Diana was, and I think William and Kate are trying to follow in his mother’s footsteps and then take that change on and keep it going.”

Richard pointed out a key difference in the way Catherine and Diana’s romantic relationships with the Royals began, saying: “With Diana, it was all too brief and an extremely formal experience … she had to call Charles ‘sir’ when they were in public and often there were other people present in the courting that they did.”

Catherine implemented a major change to maintain privacy from photographers, who had previously hounded Princess Diana and her young sons during their holidays.

At the time, the former Princess of Wales made deals with journalists to trade photo calls for private time with her sons, during which she would not be interrupted.

Catherine, however, has been able to have more control over the highly in-demand pictures of her children. The royal expert explained: “What Kate has done, which is very interesting, is use her skills as a photographer.

“She takes the pictures of the children, and I think that’s fabulous,” he concluded. In doing so, the royal is able to take wonderfully candid photos of her family and then release them on social media.

By posting them online, she instantly devalues the sales potential of any paparazzi photos. Richard stated: “They patrol their privacy very, very diligently.

“They offer up a glimpse of their home life from time to time, just enough to keep the public and media satisfied, but there are absolute boundaries.”
