Author Ingrid Seward wrote that Philip viewed the move as a “dereliction of duty”, particularly because he believed Harry and Meghan had many opportunities available to them within the Royal Family.

For Philip, the decision was reportedly about far more than where Harry and Meghan would live.

It represented a fundamental clash between two very different ideas of royal life. Philip had devoted more than seven decades to the Crown, while Harry wanted greater freedom from the restrictions and expectations that came with being a senior royal.

Despite the tension, Queen Elizabeth ultimately sought a compromise. Following the summit, the Palace said the family “respect and understand” Harry and Meghan’s desire to create a new life, while making clear that the Queen would have preferred them to remain full-time working royals.

The Sussexes eventually moved to North America, first spending time in Canada before settling in California.
