Japanese actor and voice performer Toru Shinagawa has died at the age of 90 following treatment for lymphoma, his talent agency has confirmed.
Knockout announced on Monday that Shinagawa passed away on August 29 after receiving medical care for the illness.
The veteran performer leaves behind a career spanning theatre, film, television and animation, with roles that made him familiar to audiences across several generations.
Born in Hokkaido in 1935, Shinagawa studied at a performing arts institute before completing his training in 1962.
After graduating, he joined a theatre company managed by Takeo Hodoshima and began building a career that would eventually stretch across multiple areas of Japanese entertainment.
Career Spanned Stage, Screen and Television
Shinagawa became known for taking on a wide range of character roles.
Among his television credits was the 2003 live-action series Shiroi Kyotō, also known as White Tower, in which he portrayed a professor.
His work in cinema brought further recognition.
In 2014, he delivered a leading performance in No no Nanana no ka, also known as Seven Weeks.
That role earned him a special accolade at the 24th Japan Film Professional Awards.
Shinagawa continued working in film in the years that followed, with later credits including Yama Onna, Ai no Komuragaeri, Doll House and Menkyo Hennō.
He also appeared in the live-action Fullmetal Alchemist franchise, playing the King of Xerxes in both Hagane no Renkinjutsushi: Kanketsu-hen films.
Other notable live-action roles included an appearance in MW and his portrayal of the Principal in the 2002 adaptation of Dark Water.
Shinagawa Was Also a Familiar Voice in Anime
Alongside his on-screen work, Shinagawa built an extensive career as a voice actor.
Anime viewers may recognise him as Hisashi Imakurusu in Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex.
He also voiced Ak in Shōnen Santa no Daibōken and Ichiro Shinohara in Fancy Lala.
His other voice credits included Dollar Cross in Lupin III: Swallowtail Tattoo and Professor Steamson in Project Blue Earth SOS.
Shinagawa also contributed supporting performances to a number of other well-known productions.
His credits included Sorcerer Hunters, Wolf’s Rain, Yu Yu Hakusho: Ghost Files and Jinki: Extend, among many others.
That range reflected the versatility of a performer who moved comfortably between live action and voice work throughout his career.
