Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been hit with another wave of criticism after King Charles publicly reaffirmed that the couple are not returning to the Royal Family as working members.

The clarification, issued on the King’s behalf, stated that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex remain private citizens despite their recent return to Britain.

The move quickly sparked debate over what Harry and Meghan’s long-term role in the UK might look like, with royal historian Alexander Larman offering a particularly sharp assessment on GB News.

Larman described the Palace clarification as a “brutal putdown” and argued that it removed any lingering uncertainty over whether the Sussexes could operate under some kind of “half in, half out” arrangement.

“This has very much proved that he’s not in at all, is he?” Larman said.

‘You Are Not Back in the Royal Family’

Larman suggested that the King’s message should be seen as a firm distinction between Charles’s role as Harry’s father and his responsibilities as monarch.

He interpreted the statement as effectively saying: “You’re back, I’m delighted on a paternal level that you’re back. But, as head of a firm, I’m making it very, very clear that you are not back in the Royal Family.”

He continued: “You are not going to be a working royal; you’re not going to be given any of the privileges that you might expect as a working royal.”

Larman also said the couple should not expect “special treatment” simply because they are once again living in Britain.

Those remarks were Larman’s interpretation of the Palace message rather than direct comments from King Charles.

The clarification itself was reportedly sent in a letter to senior stakeholders including government officials, the military and Lord Lieutenancies.

Its purpose was said to be avoiding “doubt or confusion” about Harry and Meghan’s position.

That wording leaves Harry and Meghan free to continue with charitable and commercial projects, but makes clear that such work is separate from official royal duties.

Harry and Meghan’s move back to Britain has prompted intense speculation about whether they intend to rebuild family relationships, strengthen ties with UK charities or take on a more public role.

But the latest Palace clarification draws a clear institutional line.

They may live in Britain and pursue public-facing projects, but they are not working royals.

Larman’s interpretation was much harsher, framing the message as the King “putting them in their place.”

For now, however, the most concrete development is simply that Charles has restated the arrangement already in place.
