Sky News interrupted its regular programming with a breaking update on Prince Harry and Meghan Markle after King Charles issued a fresh clarification about the couple’s status following their return to Britain.

Presenter Jayne Secker told viewers that the statement was intended to remove any uncertainty over whether the Duke and Duchess of Sussex might resume an official role within the Royal Family.

“Breaking news from Clarence House,” Secker said. “It’s a clarification from the King and Queen about the status Duke and Duchess of Sussex.”

She explained that the message followed Harry and Meghan’s decision to relocate back to the UK.

The statement reaffirmed that the couple remain outside the working monarchy and continue to operate privately.

Palace Says Sussex Status Has Not Changed

Reading from the statement, Secker said: “Following that decision to relocate to the UK, the King has directed that the following information be shared.”

“It is well known that the Duke and Duchess stepped down from undertaking representative duties on behalf of The Sovereign, and are no longer working members of the Royal Family.”

The Palace also stressed that Harry and Meghan’s current position is separate from the state and royal responsibilities carried out by working members of the family.

It said the arrangement gives the couple greater freedom over their finances and privacy.

The statement continued that this position “will continue to be fully respected.”

It then made the central point of the clarification explicit.

“It follows that there is no change to the current status of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex,” the message said.

“Their styles as His and Her Royal Highness remain in abeyance and are not used.”

Secker told viewers the announcement was essentially a restatement of the Sussexes’ existing position.

“It’s just restating the position of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to make it clear from the Royal Family today,” she said.

Charity Work Remains Private

The clarification also addressed Harry and Meghan’s charitable activities.

“The charitable work of the Duke and Duchess is a personal matter for them both and undertaken in their private capacity,” the statement said.

“In short, their position is akin to private citizens with commercial and charitable interests.”

That distinction is significant because Harry and Meghan’s return to the UK has sparked speculation over whether they could begin carrying out more public-facing work in Britain.

The Palace message indicates that any such appearances or charity projects would remain separate from official royal duties.

Their return has attracted considerable attention since they arrived in Birmingham by private jet at the end of August.

Much of the debate has focused on Harry’s security arrangements and whether publicly funded police protection should be restored.

Security Debate Continues

The issue has prompted sharp criticism from commentators, including Lizzie Cundy, who attacked the couple during an appearance on GB News.

“The American dream is officially over. Meghan and Harry are back in Blighty,” she said.

Cundy then criticised the couple for travelling by private jet and claimed they wanted taxpayers to cover the cost of their security.

“They want us to stump up £5million for their security,” she alleged.

The source does not independently establish that figure, so it remains part of Cundy’s commentary rather than a confirmed cost.

She also argued that Harry’s previous public statements and revelations in his memoir Spare had contributed to concerns around his safety.

Her remarks were strongly critical and represented her personal opinion, not an official assessment of Harry’s security situation.

Whatever happens with the security debate, the latest clarification makes the Royal Family’s institutional position much clearer.

Harry and Meghan may be back in Britain, but that does not mean they are returning to royal duties.

Their charitable and commercial work remains private, their HRH styles are not in active use, and their position as non-working members of the Royal Family remains unchanged.

For a couple whose return has generated weeks of speculation, the Palace message appears designed to settle at least one question.

They may once again be living in the UK, but their formal relationship with the working monarchy remains exactly where it was.
