King Charles makes Prince Harry, Meghan Markle’s royal status clear in key letter
King Charles has moved to remove any uncertainty surrounding Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s position inside the monarchy following the couple’s return to Britain with their children.
A letter sent on the King’s behalf has reportedly made clear that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will not resume duties as working royals or carry out official engagements representing the Sovereign.
The clarification comes after Harry and Meghan returned to the UK with Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet for an extended stay, six years after stepping away from frontline royal life.
According to Daily Mail royal correspondent Rebecca English, the message was sent by the Lord Chamberlain to a number of “senior stakeholders,” including government officials, military representatives and Lord Lieutenancies.
“The King has laid out his position on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex returning to the UK,” English reported.
She added that the letter makes clear the “Sandringham agreement” remains in place and that Harry and Meghan continue to operate as private individuals rather than working members of the Royal Family.
Sandringham Agreement Still Stands
The letter reportedly refers directly to the arrangement established after the Sussexes stepped back from royal duties in 2020.
“It is well known that in January 2020 the Duke and Duchess stepped down from undertaking representative duties on behalf of the Sovereign, and are no longer working Members of the Royal Family,” the message stated.
The clarification effectively closes down speculation that the couple’s return to Britain could lead to a formal comeback within the working monarchy.
Harry and Meghan may now be living in the UK again, but their constitutional and institutional position remains unchanged.
Their charitable and commercial work will also continue to be treated separately from official royal business.
“The charitable work of the Duke and Duchess is a personal matter for them both and undertaken in their private capacity,” the letter said.
The couple are therefore being treated as private citizens with their own commercial and charitable interests rather than representatives of the Crown.
HRH Styles Remain Out of Use
The clarification also addressed Harry and Meghan’s royal styles.
Their His and Her Royal Highness styles are not being used under the existing arrangement, reinforcing the distinction between the Sussexes and members of the family who continue to perform official duties.
Palace sources reportedly confirmed that the message was shared not only with relevant government, military and Lord Lieutenant officials, but also with Harry’s team.
The letter also reportedly set out where future questions involving the couple should be directed.
Queries involving official courtesies or public funding are to go through Buckingham Palace, while security matters should be handled by police.
Administrative correspondence relating specifically to Harry and Meghan will continue to be managed through their own separate office.
That division appears designed to prevent confusion now that the Sussexes are once again based in Britain but remain outside the working Royal Family.
Harry and Meghan arrived at Birmingham Airport on August 26 with Archie and Lilibet, beginning what has been described as an extended stay in Britain.
They reportedly travelled with private security rather than taxpayer-funded police protection.
Their return immediately prompted questions about whether the move could eventually lead to a renewed royal role, particularly if the couple begin working more closely with British charities or attending high-profile events.
The King’s latest clarification appears intended to draw a firm boundary around those possibilities.
Harry and Meghan remain free to pursue private charitable initiatives and commercial projects, but they will not do so on behalf of the Sovereign.
The letter therefore separates two issues that have frequently become blurred since their return: being members of the Royal Family by birth and marriage, and being working representatives of the monarchy.
For Harry and Meghan, moving back to Britain has changed their location.
According to the King’s message, however, it has not changed their royal status.
